FL Power-Forms of Energy

Dune Lakes Elementary School

Florida Power has created an Energy Interdisciplinary unit of study that fosters critical thinking skills, increases vocabulary, stimulates communication skills, and encourages students to transfer knowledge as students ask, explore and assess what they know and what they have learned.
We are asking for a grant to help with expenses for purchasing materials to go along with the lessons created by FL Power. Our goal is to engage students in the fifth grade common core standards, along with some third and fourth grade standards to prepare them for the Science FSA in the spring. Our goal is to increase our score to 63% in science. We also plan on giving three benchmark tests throughout the year (beginning, middle, end) and hope to see a 10% improvement with each one.

Pride in Performance for all English Language Learners

Walton High School

My goal is to add to my classroom library books that are high interest and low reading level for my English Language Learners (ELLs). I will continue to organize the books by Lexile so students can easily know what books are for them at that moment in their learning of English. Finally, I will better organize tablets, laptops, and headphones in my room for ease of access while practicing their English in applications like Duolingo.

Laptops for Innovative Literacy Instruction

Van R Butler Elementary

In September 2020, only 58% of my 5th grade students scored on or above grade level on the STAR reading assessment. My goal is for 85% of my students to score at or above grade level on the STAR Reading assessment by the end of the 2020-2021 school year. This grant will allow me to add three laptop computers to my classroom and continue moving toward a 1-to-1 classroom model in which every student has access to a device. Students will utilize these devices throughout the year for a variety of collaborative projects, including a research report on Explorers. They will also be used during an enrichment and remediation block to allow students to access programs that are tailored to their individual needs as readers.

Reading to Create Math Minds

Paxton School

Many students struggle with reading comprehension, which carries over to multiple subjects. This year, I want to focus on Reading Comprehension and tie that skill to Math. If a student struggles to process what they read, they struggle to understand basic math foundational skills and decipher what a math word problem is asking. By providing my students with math center materials and high interest books, I feel that they will readily use the comprehension skills from one subject to aid in the processing of complex math word problems. As a fourth-grade teacher, with the necessary items in the classroom, students will begin to grasp skills and concepts, not only for math, but reading as well. This will create an engaging learning atmosphere where students are encouraged to explore while learning. It is my goal to see an increase, not only in STAR Math, but STAR Reading as well.

Library of Liberation: Free Your Mind and Achieve!

Walton Intensity School of Excellence

Our goal is to provide our students with the experience of a library; the crossroads to success where they can experience the thrill of perusing the stacks to find inspirational people, stories of empowerment, and the knowledge to believe they can succeed, by opening a book, to open their mind.
Our school does not have a library, but we are repurposing a room for the 'Touchstone to Self Knowledge', the quintessential library! We have procured shelves, a low cost library software system, and some donated fictional paper back books. We are working on obtaining some autobiographies, non-fiction, and other books to balance out our library. We are seeking to set up a fully functioning library with periodicals, books, check out system, and lounge and study area.

I want to tell you something, help me learn to communicate!

Bay School

The goal of this project is to be able to print color visuals that will aid my non-verbal class in developing their communication skills.
I am a new teacher this year and my classroom is lacking many items that would be beneficial to the children I teach. My prekindergarten class of 3-5 yr olds is self-contained and the disabilities of my class range from developmentally delayed to children on the autism spectrum. Often, the parents of my students come into my classroom very distraught. They are often beginning to realize that their child has special needs and are at a bit of a loss how to teach or communicate with their child. The children will exhibit behavior problems that are often due to frustrations due to their inability to communicate. These families have a piece of my heart and my goal is to work with their child along with the therapists to help each child develop their communication skills to the fullest extent while in my care.
The children in my class are predominantly non-verbal, so, one of our main goals is to teach them communication. We work with a program called MELD (Multisensory Early Language Development) which teaches communication methods using 88 core word vocabulary boards. The picture below is the board of core words we use daily. I print the individual words on cardstock and laminate them, so that the students can use the individual words to communicate. Each week I print the core words out of the books that we are reading for the students use the words to create shared writing sentences. The MELD board is in color for ease in identifying the different sections of the board. The colors divide up pronouns and family, questions and positional words, verbs, and body parts and emotions.

Children learn through play, and I have included several literacy toys for our centers that will further aid in communication development through play.

Books for Tweens, on the right level

Emerald Coast Middle School

My goal is to increase my student's STAR Reading scores and instilling a love of reading with each of them. I teach intensive reading, according to the latest STAR Reading Assessment, 92% of my students are performing 2 or more grade levels below where they should be. How does one improve their reading? Practice makes perfect. With an increase of classroom books on their reading level that are high interest topics, I know my students will improve their level and I will see an increase in their reading scores. The goal I have set for my students is to have at least 80% of students to grow 1.5 grade levels this year. Students who do not read will not show growth. My goal is to provide students with books that not only interest them, but are on a level they can comprehend, while providing just enough challenge that students’ reading abilities will grow!

Teach From Anywhere in the Classroom

Teacher proximity to students helps students stay engaged in lessons but having to be at the front of the room for the majority of my instruction limits my proximity to students who don't sit in the front of the room. I would like to get a Wacom Wireless Tablet that will allow me to be in any part of my classroom while writing on my board to instruct students on how to solve various math problems.

Wobble seats for Wiggle Worms

Maude Saunders Elementary

Can you imagine sitting still in the same place for hours at a time? With the use of flexible seating, I want to increase student engagement and take away the feeling of discomfort from sitting in the same spot for an extended period of time. Giving students an option of where they want and how they want to sit will help keep them focused on their work and eliminate the discomfort of having to sit in one spot without the freedom of movement. Students will be able to 'get the wiggles out' and focus on what is most important, LEARNING.

Laptops for Literacy

Van R Butler Elementary

My goal is to acquire more assistive technology to help my students achieve learning goals and increase their reading skills.

This year my students are working with the online reading program Compass Learning. This program encourages practice with writing skills and reading comprehension that aligns with the English Language Arts Florida State Standards. Students work at various levels based on their individual needs. I am also able to assign practices that will provide enrichment or intervention for each student. Learning is differentiated for each student. With students alternating between traditional classroom learning and distance learning, it is important to utilize this platform authentically. The student population makeup in my specific classes necessitates that I provide intense remediation.

My ELA classes consist of 40 students all at varying levels. 20% of my students are classified as ESE or are on a 504 plan. 28% of my students are classified as Tier 2 or 3 and are receiving various interventions. Having extra laptops in my classroom will allow me to help meet the accommodations, interventions for these students, and differentiate their instructional needs. These students need all of the extra support and time they can using the online programs to improve their FSA and STAR scores in ELA.

PROJECT LIVING HISTORY

Walton Intensity School of Excellence

What do I mean by saying that history is “counterintuitive”? The “intuitions” at stake here are the everyday ideas students bring to my history classroom. They are the ideas that students use to make sense of everyday life, they work very well for that purpose; but people performing living history programs are looking at things differently. Living history classrooms differ from textbooks classrooms through their use of performance and their responsible mode of historiography and history labs. Alternative living history models that incorporate 'second-person interpretation,' in which the students pretend to be part of the past, may be more effective in achieving learning and mastery of Florida Standards. My Project Living History explores how second-person interpretation can go beyond simply letting students try crafts or lessons. Students can make curatorial decisions about state standards that become visible to students creating more ownership of their own learning and determining their path when meeting history standards. Having my students take ownership of their own learning aligns with our current school improvement plan 2020-2021.

One half of our student population is struggling, many of them are living in impoverished situations. Additionally, Title I families lack the time and funds to send their children to visit cultural institutions that would enhance their child’s learning. Funding Project Living History guarantees all middle and high school students will experience cultural and historical values that aligned with the state standards. Cultural learning greatly contributes to the understanding of children’s place in the world. Essentially students will experience a broad range of culture and art forms, encouraging enjoyment, participation and creativity, (Response to Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Review of Cultural Education 20 May 2011) breaking barriers to learning and human relationships, ultimately improving overall attendance, student achievement, and discipline.

The Wise Center consist of 75 students from 5th to 12th grade and 40% of the students have IEP/504s and 95% have FBA/BIP. The demographics include: 61.3% White, 17.2% Hispanic or Latino, 14% African Americans, 6.5% Multi-racial, and 1% Asian. . The trends discussed in the article Parent Involvement in Schools (Child Trends 2014) reflect the same aspects and challenges that The Wise Center faces: low-income families, difference by grades (lower grade levels have higher parent count during parent night). What’s the most accurate predictor of academic achievement? It’s not socioeconomic status, nor how prestigious the school is that their child attends. The best predictor of student success is the extent to which families encourage learning at home and involve themselves in their child’s education. I want to increase the geographical and cultural literacy of students as well as expanding the love of history in their culture. The Wise Center and Walton 'In”10”sity School of Excellence' will strengthened home-school-community partnerships; students will increased their skills and talents through enriched curricular and extracurricular experiences; and parents will share experiences and connections with other families creating feelings of support that empowers parents’ voices in school decisions.

Keep on Clicking

Van R Butler Elementary

My goal is to promote engagement in the classroom through the use of technology. It is well known that students learn better when they are having fun. That's exactly what I want to do, allow students to have fun in the classroom to help them excel. I already implement various engagement strategies with my students. They can be as simple as having the students sit on top of their desks for a change or as complicated as creating an escape room to cover the content in an exciting and unique way. While my goal is for all students to be engaged, the focus of this grant is on low performing students. I have found that my low performing students are the ones that are reluctant to participate, often off-task, and have little confidence in their ability to succeed. With this grant I will be able to buy supplies that will encourage engagement of these harder to reach students, which will promote academic growth.

Individual iPads for Intervention

Van R Butler Elementary

This year, more than ever, our school has a strong focus on intervention. As we know, students were out of school for five months in very uncertain times. This led to a pause, if not decline, in academic growth for students. Our school goal, and my goal for this grant, is for 80 percent of students to achieve learning gains this year. That means that 80 percent of my students will make a year’s worth of growth this school year, as evidenced by the STAR Reading and Math Assessments. In order to meet that goal, these iPads will be used individually by students during math and reading intervention time for specific programs that will meet their learning needs. The programs utilized on these iPads will allow for immediate feedback and teacher intervention. The goal for this, “Individual iPads for Intervention,” is to target the learning needs and gains of all students, from students learning the English language, to gifted students, and every student in between.
