Impact to My Classroom

My students have been able to learn all about community helpers and really immerse themselves into what it means to be a community helper and what each community helper gives back to the community all thanks to this grant. During the month of February we turned the dramatic play center into a full blown post office where the students learned how to write a letter, address an envelope, and send it. The students were able to pretend to be the mail carrier and ick up and drop off letter to our classroom mailboxes. During our food unit the center was transformed into a grocery store where they learned how to be a consumer. The students have helped me to create a completely separate center for dress up where they have been able to dress the part and role-play that of a police man, pilot, firefighter, dentist, vet, and doctor. We also turned our dramatic play into a restaurant and learned what it meant to be a chef. We tlaked about what a recipe is and even created a class cookbook with our students and their parents.

We aren't finished yet, we have plans to transform the dramatic play center once again during our animal unit. We plan to turn it into a vet's office.

This grant has not only impacted the students that are in my class now but will continue to do so for years to come.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant will be to purchase materials to help transform our dramatic play center into different scenarios throughout the school year. This will allow students opportunities to learn about and act out various community helper roles and develop and practice social emotional and language skills. Preschoolers learn best through play and these items will not only help foster their imagination and creativity but also their vocabulary, language skills, and social/emotional skills.

What will be done with my students

My students will have the opportunity to learn about community helpers and the roles they play in our everyday lives. Students will then be able to act out and pretend to be those community helpers while gaining fundamental social/ emotional and language skills.

Benefits to my students

My students are preschoolers so having a strong social/emotional foundation not only prepares them for Kindergarten but also for life. They will develop the skills they need for problem solving amongst their peers and role playing skills. They will also learn all about community helpers and the important roles they have all while playing, which is what a preschooler does best!

Budget Narrative

The items purchased will include dress up items for a doctor, mail man, pilot, police officer, chef, vet, and firefighter totaling $195, a dentist kit totaling $29.99, a dress up center storage rack w/ mirror for $169.95, various accessories to accompany each community helper totaling $245.06. Also included is a wooden vet station totaling $59, included is a wooden pretend stand that I will use as a backdrop for rotating the community helper themes totaling $219.95. The total cost for all items is $ 918.95 with free shipping and can all be purchased on Amazon.
