The objective of STEM items being asked to purchase, is to ignite an interest in learning, and to help uncover the fascinating world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) by providing my Pre- Kindergarten ESE students the chance to use hands on supplies as the students investigate, observe, ask questions, make hypotheses, and learn about the things that world around them has to offer. Purchased items such as a mini-instant camera, pattern block puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, a wooden grocery store, a cash register, marble run, family counters, wooden train set, a muffin match set, matching and/or sorting bears, car track sticker tape, engineering building set, and a tractor engine assembling toy will allow students to beginning to learn as they play and interact with the world around them. These materials will help connect the ideas that are taught in class with the outside world, in return this will help with FAST assessments given to Pre-Kindergarten Students (entering Kindergarten) each year.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 6

Students from the 2022-2023 school year greatly benefited from the items purchased. The students have also benefitted greatly from learning how to properly use new materials. The items are used daily to help develop and grow a pride in themselves as well as what they are learning, helping students realize that they can do things even when they are hard. These items help to encourage an interest in science, technology, engineering and math at a young age even if these students exceptionalities make take often more difficult. Students are learning the laws of physics, gravity and many more STEM related fields. These ESE students are learning to use tools and how to fix things, since aquiring the items from this grant. We are very thankful for all of those involved in helping to provide funding for grants such as these.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

STEM items that will be useful are puzzles that will challenge the young minds to think in a new way. In my ESE class, students will use the grocery store to discover how to interact with the world around them as well as how to use the tool (such as a cash register) to enhance their lives. Another concept that will also be brought to life through these materials are engineering toys, such as a tractor engine, train tracks, construction toys and building toys. The item requested titled “Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera” will let students take photographs of their creations and post them on the board outside our classroom to show others the things that they created. This will also allow them to see similarities and differences in things they created and things that their peers created. Our classroom is a unique space where students have the chance to experience a play-based learning approach. The items requested will help students observe that learning happens in school, at the grocery store, with vehicles and all around, not just with a pencil and paper.

Benefits to my students

As an educator for the Walton District School System, I plan to include these items in my “Come On Lets Play” Stem Education Grant in the ESE PreK program curriculum at Freeport Elementary School. This will benefit approximately 6 students ranging from age three to five. Pre-K students share the ability to learn best in daily interactions they have, day to day life and the environment around them without the pressures often associated in classrooms. The goal of PreK is to develop a love for learning, this often does not happen in other classrooms because of the restrictions of a traditional classroom, that does not include the freedom of play. It is imperative that ESE Pre-K students have access to education practices and resources that boost and escalate their growing love for learning. Because of diverse characteristics, abilities, and social-emotional development of my students, they will benefit most when needs are met by providing hands on activities that coincide with the curriculum and units of study.

Budget Narrative

These items can be found on Amazon.com. They would be a massive benefit in the education of ESE Pre-K students. All monies received would be appreciated and well used!
