Walton Education Foundation

As a second language learner myself, I find that true learning happens beyond classroom instruction, it happens when we put our learning into practice through speaking, reading and writing and enjoy it!. For that reason, building our Spanish Library has two goals:

1. Teach Spanish through Literacy and differentiation. I want students to love learning Spanish. Providing books for structured reading time and free-reading at various levels is an amazing way to reach each student where they are.

2. Inclusivity through Literacy. To help Heritage Spanish speakers connect with their mother tongue and culture. This student population spends most of their school day speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. Many of our students are fluent in speaking and listening, but cannot read or write very well. For that reason, it is so important that as a school, we strengthen their literacy skills in their mother tongue as it sets them up for success with their English literacy.

What will be done with my students

1. Students in Spanish 1, 2 and 3 will read two books per semester. This will complement our instructional material to create meaningful connections with their acquired learning and core curriculum. A class novel we all read together opens up the opportunity for class discussions, vocabulary building and writing opportunities.

2. Students (English speakers and Spanish Heritage Learners) will be able to check books out to read when they are done with classwork and at home. Students will be required to present their annotations, vocabulary list and answer reflection questions. Reading for fun is an amazing tool as students acquire grammar and spelling naturally while getting lost in a book they enjoy reading

Benefits to my students

While this library will impact our students’ Spanish literacy foundation through reading, writing and analytical skills in Spanish, this is a transferable skill that will carry over to English.

As our student population will increase exponentially next year, this grant will impact hundreds of students for years to come and these novels will serve as resources beyond this school year.

As our school grows, we will see an increase in the Hispanic/Latino population. This grant will promote inclusivity, students will feel their culture and mother tongue is not just acknowledged, but honored and celebrated at our school.
