Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 8

My students' skills in Reading and Math have improved dramatically since receiving these activities.  At the beginning of the year, students could not identify any sight words, and today, they can identify and recall anywhere between 17-53 depending on age and ability.  The hands on learning activities truly made a difference.  They get excited to choose the activities that they love and that challenge them, during center time.  The math activities have developed their learning of math skills to a concrete level.  It is always rewarding to watch them work independently and be able to assess their knowledge as they go.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To give my behavioral and autistic students a hands on approach to learning using manipulatives to help students achieve their social/emotional, academic, communcation, and independent functioning IEP goals (Individual Education Plan).

What will be done with my students

The students will use the hands on learning activities everyday during instruction and independent learning time. There are 10 students and 3 teachers/paraprofessionals in the self-contained classroom that will use the materials each day and many more students that will use these resources for years to come. Students will improve their academics, fine motor skills, social/emotional skills/ and their self esteem as they will have tools needed to aid in their success. Students will be able to work in small groups or independently or in small groups to complete sensory activities and improve academic skills. The teachers will be responsible for guiding students to use the materials correctly and also collect data on how well they mastering their IEP goals.

Benefits to my students

Students I work with are either autistic or have severe behavioral outburst and would benefit from hands on learning approach to not only give them a physical representation of skills but also help with their frustration levels. Due to the behavioral outburst of some of my students, having these manipulatives would help with addressing academic deficits and gain confidence needed to be successful with their same age peers.
