Teachers are foundational to student success. We support teachers by empowering them with the resources they need to be effective in the classroom.
Everyday, teachers and administrators go beyond the curriculum, looking for ways to enhance the learning environment for their students. By conducting creative, exciting projects and programs in and out of the classroom, it helps keep students motivated and engaged in lessons.
With your support, we invest in teachers’ and principals’ innovative ideas to create educational experiences that make an impact.

In the VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. This year’s goals are to:
1. Attain a higher score than the opposing Alliance by Scoring Discs in Goals, Owning Rollers, and Covering field tiles at the end of the Match.
2. Compete in the skills competition, in which teams will compete in sixty-second-long matches in an effort to score as many points as possible. This is what ranks teams in the world standings.
3. Program the robot using the VEXcode IDE to autonomously score disks and own rollers described in 1 without a driver.
4. Keep a detailed engineering notebook that contained both design ideas as well as implemented designs with sketches, design process decisions, updates on each practice, and code design.
5. Collaborate with other schools. Teams are randomly paired with other teams to work together to accomplish these goals.
Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, national, and global levels. This grant will specifically pay for entrance fees, robot parts, and expenses associated with VEX competitions.

The goal of this project is to be able to purchase all of the recommended consumable materials for hands on science investigations. Our district has done an amazing job of creating lessons, questioning guides, and assessments for our students. However, often times the materials required for the hands-on investigations require the teacher to spend money to locate those materials. Some examples: seeds, soil, cups, flashlights, thermometers, batteries, pull back cars, wind up toys etc. My idea is to go through the recommended investigations for the school year, make a master supply list, buy those items, and rotate them through all 7 second grade classrooms. That way our whole grade level is able to collaborate, share resources, and no one is shelling out of their pocketbooks.

The goal of this project is to support our new Beta Club at Miles. The Beta Club is a nationally recognized club that promotes leadership, positive character and community service. The Beta Club at Miles hopes to bring these characteristics to our school by promoting a culture of community service, academic success, and character development. Our Beta Club has started with a small group of students and we have seen the positive impact on our school culture. In addition to community service projects, we hope to promote college readiness by exposing students to the University of South Florida through a field trip. The goal of our club is to promote community service, academic success and character development within our school. We would like to do community service projects as well as serve our school community. We need money to take the Beta club on field trips as well. One of the field trips we would like to take is to USF. Many of our students have not been on a college campus. We would like plan to work with USF so that our field trip is focused on STEM-focused degrees. We would like to talk to students and staff that work in the science and math departments and possible incorporate experiments the students could work with. We would like to have an end of the year banquet at a restaurant for our club members. We need money for registration fees, t-shirts and our induction ceremony. Lastly, o Our Beta Club would like to give back to the community by serving others. Our Beta Club is planning community service events at a nearby nursing home and at Metropolitan Ministries. Our club would like to reach nursing homes, metropolitan ministries and other community programs. Our Beta Club would like to give back to our teachers by showing appreciation through service and activities that teachers would enjoy. We would ultimately like to add more students to the club as we have many students that want to join but do not have the funds to do so to expand the club at this time. This grant would allow us to support our current students and enroll new students into the Beta Club.

I find it important that my students get the opportunity to experiment with all visual arts as it relates to the Sunshine State standard, VA.912.S.3.12 -
Develop competence and dexterity, through practice, with the use of processes, tools, and techniques for various media. We make the class fun as the students work on various clay forms. The goal of this grant is to provide my students with additional clay so they can create bigger creations and have the opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them. Ceramic without glaze is an unfinished masterpiece and through this grant, we will gain enough glaze to make colorful creations, canvas covered boards to work on and easy-to-clean aprons to leave the mess at school.

The goal of The NETS Project is to revive our school’s Physical Education Program by reintroducing volleyball/badminton and soccer units! As a Title 1 school, we simply do not have the extra funding to revamp all the needed equipment to support these units.
We attempted the inexpensive volleyball standards that we could purchase with a $250 mini-grant from our PTSA, but they didn’t hold up well. We were forced to stop using them all together because the lightweight volleyball standards easily tip over which resulted in injured students. We have tried to improvise soccer goals using cones on the field, which brought a safety concern while collecting soccer balls that were kicked outside of the school gates.
To enhance the experience and increase the minutes of actual play, purchasing quality volleyball standards and nets, along with soccer goals would allow us to take our student’s Physical Education to the next level.

The goal of this grant is for my students to see the conductor (drum major) clearly to keep up with the tempo [MU.912.S.3.5 - Develop and demonstrate proper vocal or instrumental technique.]. Conducting a marching band means leading the band while marching, keeping track of time, and directing when and what to play through verbal communication or hand gestures. My drum major climbs up on a podium hundreds of times to conduct the marching band. It is important to have the right podium for safety, assembly and size.
We have one fully working podium currently, while having two drum majors, and two that are broken or missing pieces. Our working podium is only four feet high, making it difficult for our students to see our drum major from the other side of the field. The other is a larger podium which is a 6 foot command center podium, but it does not fold up due to being rusted in the rain over the years since there is no storage space for it, therefore we constantly need to ask to borrow a podium from other schools whenever visiting for football games or traveling away for competitions. Our last podium has missing screws and handrails, and we've not been able to utilize it efficiently this year.
With the 72'' podium, we'd be able to efficiently store it, travel with it, and have the security of the handrails.

Do you know what kind of bridge the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway here in Tampa is? An arch bridge, a beam or truss bridge, a suspension bridge - do you remember the difference? I hope my students will, as they do hands-on learning for the standard SC.2.P.13.1, Investigate the effect of applying various pushes and pulls on different objects. My students are always interested in practicing with new materials and we are going to be building bridges with different kinds of construction principals. They start with a simple 2D graphic of the bridge they want to create and end with a 3D version of a bridge. The bridge has to be able to hold 2 lbs weight, just like our Tampa bridges have to hold the weight of cars. Now only one question remains - Will their bridge buckle, snap or hold up under weight?

Young people like my middle school students are the voices of the next generation. The Florida Sunshine state standard ELA.8.R.1.4 addresses the poetic literary art form by asking the students to Analyze structure, sound, imagery, and figurative language in poetry. Poetry has been hidden in plain sight for a long time. It helps express images and emotions in different formats.
The goal of this grant is to provide an engaging, high interest display of books containing poems my students gravitate to check out and additional books to replenish the display. The display will be used during April’s poetry month, during the lesson plan for the sunshine standard and selected books will be used during other months such as black history month, Hispanic heritage month and women’s history month. The books cover anything and everything from girl power, embracing your inheritance, encouraging changes in the world and believing in yourself.

I would like new badminton rackets and Birdies for PE. This equipment does not last in a PE class. The frames and birdies are fragile and barely last with heavy use and large numbers. We use them with 700 students for about 8 weeks. I like to have enough for each child to be able to practice by themselves until they are ready for partner work and game work. After the heavy use, some have to be thrown away. Buying good quality ones help them last much longer. If you use a different type of ball it does not give the students the same challenge as the birdie. The birdie travels slow and then drops like a regular ball. Playing badminton authentically really is fun and challenging.

I am an AGP teacher who incorporates standard HE.5.B.4.1 into my lesson plan which states “Illustrate techniques of effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills to enhance health”. I use our outdoor garden as a sensory outlet where my students can see, smell, touch or simply hear our lessons in a calm outdoor environment. Some of my students are on the spectrum and the school noises can lead to anxiety and stress so bringing a lesson outdoors can help them refocus on the lesson and stay present. A well designed outside area can serve as a bridge between mind, body and spirit.
I also include the garden to encourage attendance. My students arrive early to school to water the plants, pull weeds, look at the wildlife and enjoy a calm moment before school starts. It is not just a club, it is a community.
We have some students who have attendance issues and with Covid-19 this will continue to be an issue for all students.
Encouraging early attendance and the ability to take a lesson outside is the goal of this grant.
