Hillsborough Education Foundation School and Classroom Enrichment Grants

My pottery class has increased from two classes to three due to the clay artwork from the past two years has drawn interest in pottery. As an art teacher, I would like to continue that momentum and expand our program. The students are making the art for fun, not just for graduation requirements. I find it important that my students get the opportunity to experiment with all visual arts as it relates to the Sunshine State standard, VA.912.S.3.12 -
Develop competence and dexterity, through practice, with the use of processes, tools, and techniques for various media. We make the class fun as the students work on various clay forms. The goal of this grant is to provide my students with additional clay so they can create bigger creations and have the opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them. Ceramic without glaze is an unfinished masterpiece and through this grant, we will gain enough glaze to make colorful creations, canvas covered boards to work on and easy-to-clean aprons to leave the mess at school.
This grant helps me teach the standard by having the proper tools, materials and techniques for clay.
The interest in pottery art has increased as the students from prior years have been boasting around the school about how wonderful of an experience making pottery is. My students love to work with clay since it can be very therapeutic. My kinesthetic learners choose to manipulate the clay over other visual art mediums like pencils or paint. Clay is very forgiving as long as proper techniques are followed prior to it being fired in the kiln. We are lucky to have a cone 5 kiln in the classroom.
As the interest has grown, I need extra shelving to store their creations as the clay dries and gets ready for the fire. If granted, this grant will provide me with that extra space, additional clay for larger clay creations, and glaze to complete their masterpieces. The glaze is the most expensive consumable material that is used with clay and sometimes we simply run out of glaze.
My students learn about the properties of clay, how to construct it into different forms and what to consider when firing their pieces in the kiln. The materials that they have access to limits the size of the pieces they make and the details on the art. The clay will be easier to manage with the help of the canvas-covered boards and denim aprons. The glaze is the icing on the cake that makes a piece pop to life. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a student go from conceptualizing their creation to having the final piece finished.
The expected outcome is that with more clay, proper aprons, boards, and glaze, the students will enjoy working with clay and have colors to express themselves.
