We want to make learning more equitable for our students who have "invisible disabilities" and neurological differences, such as dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, by having resources specific to helping them learn. Resources we are looking to add are more audiobooks, large print books, flexible furniture, headsets with microphones, and books that showcase the variety of disabilities and neurodiverse people/characters. We also hope this project destigmatizes the use of accommodations and educates both students and teachers on how we can better serve our students' learning goals.
Statistics currently state that up to 1 in 5 students have dyslexia, almost 10% have ADHD, and 1 in 6 kids from ages 3-17 is reported to have been diagnosed with a developmental disability. In a population of over 1400 kids, that means an estimated over 300 students have some kind of "invisible" disability. These students are often undiagnosed while we serve them. Studies have shown that using resources and teaching methods to accommodate these students, such as audio-text functions, immersive readers, and large print, do not hinder neuro-typical and able-bodied students when they use them too.
Therefore, use by our whole student population will not only help the students who need the accommodations (diagnosed or not), but also destigmatize the use of these accommodations.
We expect students who need these accommodations to see a boost in confidence which will relay in their performance in school.
Also, we expect to see an increased use of the media center, specifically in the use of the audiobooks, Playaways, eBooks, and large print selections. The increased use of reading should translate to better reading performance, as well as other disciplines.
Books will be purchased from a variety of vendors, such as BookDeopt, Follett, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon to get the best financial deal. Headphones will be purchased from whoever has the best deal, most likely from a Vendor available in ClassWallet. Furniture will be purchased through School Specialty to increase the reading and work areas we have available.
