The goal of this project is to be able to purchase all of the recommended consumable materials for hands on science investigations. Our district has done an amazing job of creating lessons, questioning guides, and assessments for our students. However, often times the materials required for the hands-on investigations require the teacher to spend money to locate those materials. Some examples: seeds, soil, cups, flashlights, thermometers, batteries, pull back cars, wind up toys etc. My idea is to go through the recommended investigations for the school year, make a master supply list, buy those items, and rotate them through all 7 second grade classrooms. That way our whole grade level is able to collaborate, share resources, and no one is shelling out of their pocketbooks.
Having hands on science consumable materials will make it so easy for teachers to do “the lab”. No longer will it be here watch this video of these kids doing the experiment only and write about it in your notebook. Or maybe the teacher has enough supplies for one demonstration and the children get to watch him/her investigate. My idea is to fully immerse them, buy those materials, fill their hands with science, which will ultimately fill their minds with the experience and will leave a lasting impression on them.
We will use the end of the year science test provided by the district as a pre and post assessment for a baseline and to show their growth. We will also use the recommended daily/weekly assessments linked in Canvas to progress monitor. That will also signal needs for remediation.
Each unit will correlate with the lessons described in canvas. Once approved for the funds I will detail the purchase list.
