To create a sensory space for our students with physical, behavioral cognitive impairments within our self-contained classrooms, grades pre-k to fifth. We would like to provide sensory benefits to all our students by offering them a multi-sensory experience.
A sensory room can provide a unique and stimulating learning environment that allows many students to thrive. It is a quiet space dedicated to stimulating, developing, and relaxing the senses. Unlike the school classroom, where children are usually expected to watch and listen to the teacher, a sensory room allows the students the freedom to explore the environment for themselves, in their own time, using all their senses. The décor will include florescent light filters, free space for movement and a diverse collection of interesting objects to examine and play with naturally.
It is our hope that the calming sensory room resources will provide our students the opportunity to regulate their sensory needs and refocus their attention to their classwork, decrease aggressive behaviors, develop fine motor skills, as well as provide mental and physical relaxation. Overall, these items will help our students to calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others.
All items will be purchased from Amazon and will be shipped directly to the school at no extra cost. If funded this grant will reach 5 classrooms with over 60 self-contained ESE students on access points.
