Bringing the World to the Classroom

Emma Love Hardee Elem.

Mentor texts will be used to allow Interactive Read Alouds to be a part of Language Arts. It will help broaden students' understanding of social studies and social skills beyond a text book. Students will learn about other cultures, countries, ways of life, diversity and problem solving in social situations. Interactive Read Alouds take the 'heavy lifting' from students and gives them the opportunity to focus more on comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, and discussion. This gives all students, ie. ELL, ESE, and gen ed) the same advantage.

Let's Talk About It

Fernandina Beach High

Assisting children with developmental delays in language and communication skills is a major part of the participatory classroom curriculum. These students learn best when presented with photographs of real objects, actions, and modifiers. Taking photographs and color printing of those images can be extremely costly to the teacher. The goal of this grant focuses on the creation of a photo card bank of purposeful, functional vocabulary for children in the participatory class. The durable, colorful photo cards will enhance language learning and provide stimulating prompts for eliciting language from the students.

Now I see it!

Fernandina Beach High

The goal for science classes is to involve each student during daily instruction. I will have 100% participation and engagement when students can use a 3D printer to create their vision, see how the vision comes to life, and use manipulatives to grasp the concept. Science is about hands-on experiments for the students to hypothesize and develop real-world, problem solving skills. The objective of science classes is to investigate all areas including earth & space, physical, and life science.
Giving them the capability to actually manufacture their own evidence will put the “WOW” factor in the lesson, and hopefully spark their interest in science. I believe this will engage all of the students and ignite a passion for STEM classes. If we can build it, and they can see it, they will become more engaged.
I currently have a mystemkits grant (company website: www.mystemkits.com) through cpalms. However, the older 3D Dremel printer we currently have is clogging and not finishing printing. The customer representative with whom I have been talking for technical support, has given me a quote for a new printer. The Robo E3 3D printer will be easier for the students to use and will speed up the printing process to allow less time between jobs. This printer was designed for education and works with the MyStemKits per the customer service representative. (See my quote above)

ESOL- Material for our non-English speaking students (ELL)

Fernandina Beach High

Fernandina Beach High School is experiencing an influx of non-English speaking students. Currently we have over 30 ESOL students in our high school with an expected arrival of 9-20 more from FBMS and other schools. These students have limited English vocabulary skills. As teachers, we struggle to have materials for these students. We need engaging materials to help these students achieve success. A program titled ELL Teen Literacy Library is specially designed for English Language Learners in Grades 7-12. The product features low readability and photographs on each page to support comprehension with a focus on vocabulary acquisition. Progress is monitored in the form of assessments for each book. The content is high interest and covers five different genres, including Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. There is extensive support for every book. Currently we have no specific programs for our ELL students and teachers are having to modify and search for materials- often unsuccessfully. It is difficult to find programs that are specifically designed for various levels of English comprehension.

Spectrophotometer for AP Chemistry Course

Fernandina Beach High

The objective of advanced science classes is to prepare students for college-level courses, or in the case of AP courses, to actually obtain college credit. The spectrophotometer is a vital instrument in the laboratory for an AP Chemistry course. We currently have two units. The additional spectrophotometer requested will allow for chemistry students to work more efficiently in the limited time available for labs and will provide redundancy in case the older units needed servicing. Continued acquisition of apparatus such as this will be required for having an effective AP chemistry course at this high school.

Listen to Learn

Hilliard Mid-Sr High

We are very fortunate to work in a school district that provides one-to-one technology for our middle school students. The students have access to educational programs on the computer such as Lexia, CommonLit, and USA Test Prep that read aloud to the students. For each student to have a set of headphones, this will benefit them greatly and cut out any distractions as they are working. The students work at different paces and in a classroom, they are sitting very close to their neighbors. By providing headphones to the students, they can focus and complete their assignment independently.

I encourage my students to purchase a TI-84 calculator when they enroll in my AP Statistics class or my Physics 1 Honors class because I am going to teach them how to use it. Many students purchase them for my classes, but many cannot afford to. I want every student that enters my classroom to have the same problem-solving technology available to them.
