Goal

To bring practical hands on experiences into the classroom by adding memorable lab experiences.

What will be done with my students

These supplies will cover all costs associated with two separate labs tying multiple units together as a culminating group projects at the end of the year. The first is for a bacterial culture lab where students will set up an entire experiment to test the frequency of bacterial on different surfaces across campus. This will follow our population studies in ecology and lead into immunity for body systems unit. Students use math, science and literacy skills to accomplish this.
The second lab is for dissection to conclude the school year following human body systems and the EOC. Dissections are a highly informative exploratory process which students will remember for years to come. In order to facilitate this, we need the dissection specimens, which could easily be a grant of their own, as well as some new tools to complete an effective lab.

Benefits to my students

This will provide a hands on learning opportunity, student-centered exploratory processes which enhance the year's curriculum. Many students don't have access to dissection until Anatomy & Physiology or college level classes, and by introducing them earlier, students with an affinity for STEM shine and those who are more reluctant learners engage with a new experience.

Budget Narrative

While specimens are expensive, they can be utilized in team or group settings to increase collaboration. All of the tools requested ($450) can be reused in the future and are needed to stock basic necessities in the science department.
