From Micro:bits to Smart Homes: Empowering Students with the Magic of Coding

Pine Ridge High School

Coding is like learning a new language, and just like learning a language, applying it in practical, real-world scenarios enhances comprehension. This project serves as a valuable opportunity for students to not only delve into the intricacies of coding but also to harness the advantages of applying these coding skills to a tangible, real-life project.
In simpler terms, coding, which involves writing instructions for computers to follow, can be compared to teaching a computer how to think and act. Python, in this context, is the coding language used to trin the Micro:bit to perform a task. By engaging in this project, students will gain hands-on experience in using Python to control and automate various aspects of a smart home, illuminating the practical applications of coding in our daily lives.

SPHERE-heading the Way to a Brighter Future

DeBary Elementary School

A 'Quiet Crisis' continues to exist in how we educate excelling students in our country. Young students of all backgrounds with gifts and talents in all academic, creativity, leadership and motivation areas are still not challenged in education to perform to their full potential. My goal with the Sphero Bolt coding robots is to inspire gifted and talented students' curiosity, enabling them to explore their creativity and inventiveness. The goal is also to help improve the motivation of these students, who statistically speaking, can often struggle with work ethic or perseverance due to a lack of exposure to difficult concepts at early ages. In reference to Bloom’s Taxonomy, offering students the opportunity to utilize higher level thinking skills, including analysis, synthesis and evaluation will improve their ability to reason and think abstractly in real world situations. The Sphero Bolt robots enable students to tap into these higher level skills, offering opportunities for a growing impact on society while developing a love for the learning process. As both a gifted resource teacher and a science intervention teacher, these bots will also be used with Grades 3-5 Science Intervention to develop mastery of science standards including force and motion, electricity, circuits, and energy. One grant= hundreds of students benefit.

DREAMS ((Diving into Realistic and Enriching Applications in Mathematics and Science) STEM Club

Longstreet Elementary School

The goal of this grant is to continue a STEM club with 5th grade students at R. J. Longstreet Elementary (in partnership with General Electric volunteers) who demonstrate a passion for science and math. Fifth grade students look forward to being part of STEM Club and this is the year they can immerse themselves in hands-on learning experiences. This year our goal will be to provide STEM experience to those students who may not have these experiences otherwise. I work in a Title I school, so I see the disadvantage that those students have regarding experiences. It's my goal to give experiences to students that will level the playing field and add to students’ background knowledge. In this club, students will be given the opportunity to take their learning to the next level. They will hone in on their curiosity and dive deeper in the science and math standards covered in the classroom while making real-life connections to how learning is connected and are the building blocks for deeper and higher level thinking. It's a chance for the students to combine knowledge they've learned with things they now wonder with the help and support of a teacher and volunteers.

Expressive Me!

Indian River Elementary School

The goal is to assist PreK students in developing executive function skills in order to increase their social-emotional, self-regulation, expressive language skills, and cooperative play skills. Developing students’ social emotional and regulation skills will allow students to become more engaged in their learning tasks. Specifically, students will learn to identify emotions and the physiological components of what occurs in their bodies, learn ways to regulate their bodies and develop the ability to create positive relationships with peers and adults. Students will also develop vocabulary to express their emotions and communicate their wants, needs and preferences.

This mini grant proposal is based on students’ present levels (as supported in Individualized Education Plans) in the areas of social-emotional learning and expressive language skills; and are supported by both the Florida Early Learning and Development Standards (FELDS) and the Volusia County Schools District Strategic Plan:
Goal 1: 1. Engage ALL learners in high levels of learning EVERY day.
Goal 2: School leaders ensure teachers are infusing culturally responsive practices in their classroom management system, identifying potential implicit bias and ensuring they provide equitable learning opportunities for all students.
Goal 3: Safe & Supportive Environment: 3C Strategy Statement: Support school leaders to build a positive school culture at district facilities.

Rubik’s Cube SEL Social Skills Group

George Marks Elementary School

Rubik’s Cube SEL Social Skills Group
Making friends, joining in group games or projects, attending parties and relaxing with extended family are often among life’s pleasures. However, some children, teens and young adults find working, playing and celebrating with others as puzzling as trying to solve the Rubik’s Cube. Why these difficulties? Many times, these people need help strengthening their social skills.
We looked at our school discipline data from last year and noted our most repeat offenders. We are starting to see some aggressive behaviors this year with the same students. We decided to intervene differently this year by providing a SEL Rubik’s Cube Group for these students.

How to Develop Social Skills-Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social skills develop and mature during childhood, as youngsters meet and learn from a wider array of people and situations. Some people, however, have difficulty reading the social cues others are communicating to them.
Fortunately, with professional help, social skills can improve, often through a process called social skills therapy, typically done weekly in small groups. Many times, social workers, School Counselors, or Speech Therapists lead the group members through a variety of carefully chosen activities geared towards highlighting a specific social skill area.
With school age children, many of these activities take the form of games. “Freeze dancing,” for example, teaches youngsters self-control over their bodies and their impulses. “Show and tell” allows children to take turns and develop communication skills. Children and adults can learn the art of “small talk” and chatting while sharing a small meal –another social skill. Board games or other group projects bring participants together to practice skills such as problem-solving, cooperation, and compromise.
Role-plays are also key in teaching social skills to children, adolescents, and young adults. This technique and other approaches offer opportunities to practice and learn appropriate greetings, giving of compliments, and showing empathy.
In essence, social skills groups are small, safe environments to experiment with cultivating social skills. The broader objective of social skills therapy is to help individuals, over time and with the support of parents and teachers, incorporate better social skills into daily situations.

SEL Harmony School Wide Goals:

PROMOTING POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOR School culture and climate have a profound impact on students’ academic progress and their relationships with peers and adults. Each school is expected to promote a positive school culture that provides students with a supportive environment in which to grow both socially and academically. Schools are expected to take a proactive role in nurturing students’ pro-social behavior. We are looking for a reduction of .25 % in referrals from this student population.

Social Emotional Learning must be a basic component of a school’s program of universal prevention for all students. Effective social emotional learning helps students develop fundamental life skills, including:
• Recognizing and managing
emotions
• Developing caring and concern for
others
• Establishing positive relationships
• Making responsible decisions
• Handling challenging situations
constructively and ethically

When students develop these skills, they experience more positive relationships with peers, engage in more productive social behaviors, and are less likely to engage in misconduct.

Kindness Begins With Me

Timbercrest Elementary School

Because we believe that 'Kindness begins with me,' we feel very strongly about empowering our Kindness Squad with tools that allow them to promote the Spirit of Kindness with other Timbercrest Tigers. This grant is all about empowering our “Kindness Squad” students to prove that Kindness starts with them!
Timbercrest Elementary Kindness Squad consists of 4th and 5th grade student leaders that demonstrate positive attitudes and choices around the school. These students have been selected by previous teachers that felt that they represented kindness, friendship, encouraging, and helpful qualities that promoted positivity at Timbercrest.
Each Friday morning, they greet our Timbercrest Tigers at Parent Pick-Up dancing and waving Spirit Sticks. They also look for ways to encourage other Timbercrest Tigers in their classes as well as on our school campus. Videos of our Kindness Squad doing “their thing” are shared on social media to share the experience with parents, families, and the community.
For our fourth year, we are looking for additional resources to help promote this program throughout the school and bring more Acts of Kindness to Timbercrest. We hope to not only encourage student leadership in our Kindness Squad, but to inspire others to be kind. Our Kindness Squad representatives have brainstormed these ideas to continue improving our Kindness Movement across the school and community. his project will reinforce all the SEL standards from the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors for Students Success, on which the VCS SEL program is based.
Mindset Standards: M2 Self-Confidence in ability to succeed.
M3. Sense of belonging in the school environment.
M6. Positive attitude toward work and learning.
Behavior Standards: Learning Strategies B-LS, Self-Management Skills B-SMS, and Social Skills B-SS.
B-LS4 Apply self-motivation and self-direction to learning
B- SMS1. Demonstrate ability to assume responsibility

The Five E's- Leading Us to Excellence

DeBary Elementary School

According to, “Why do We Need to Teach Science in Elementary School,” (Cafarella, Mcculloch and Bell, January 2017), the future of our nation depends on a scientifically literate public, but less than 35% of K-5 grade students receive daily instruction in science. Participation in quality science instruction from an early age encourages students to develop a favorable attitude towards science. In my science intervention classes for grades 3-5, my goal is to enable students to connect science hands-on learning with the grade level content standards. Students need to participate in the 5E’s of the science learning process (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate), which helps provide structure for students to connect science ideas with experiences, and apply this learning to new contexts. In order for this to occur, I need to have the necessary science materials for my students to engage and explore. These processes will lead to explaining what they learned, elaborating to new situations, and evaluating the outcomes and impact. Grade levels receive district funding for science consumables to use in their classrooms on a daily basis, but as a science intervention teacher, I work with the students that haven't yet mastered the standards after receiving classroom instruction. Having the ability to have tangible materials at my students' fingertips for each and every lesson, in an intervention setting with 15-20 other peers, could be the connection they need to cement their learning and master the standards.

Our goal is to educate students how to be healthy now, so they can continue to be healthy later in life. Our Garden Club is hosting 45 students in grades 3-5 this school year. We had over 100 kids apply for this club, but unfortunately, we do not have enough supplies and materials to accommodate this many students. We currently have 4 garden beds and would like to include herbs and herb planters in our garden area. We know nutrition is important and we want our kids to be able to learn how to cultivate, grow plants, and discover why eating healthy is important to our bodies. Classrooms use the garden as well to teach necessary science/health benchmarks. This allows our entire school to have a hands-on experience while covering many benchmarks in grades K-5. Our garden area is such an important part of learning for all, here at Timbercrest and we would love to expand, to accommodate all of our students needs. We want to be able to share our Garden Club experience with all grade levels and not just 3-5.

PLAYGROUND & THE QUEST FOR CREATIVITY

Deltona High School

In addition to Odyssey of the Mind, this year I am implementing an exciting new program called PLAYGROUND: A safe place where you can create, discover, and explore what interests you. This is a student driven bi-monthly program where students choose various theatre related stations that interest them. In addition, I have been involved as an Odyssey of the Mind coach and judge for several years and I am excited to continue to bring this creative, problem solving program to our theatre students. My past teams have won at the District level, State level, and World Finals. A few years back my team of 5th graders were 1st place in the World for their theatrical solution. This is a program that I am very passionate about and excited to introduce to our Theatre 2 students specifically. Here is a helpful link which explains the program in detail:

Readers Make Writers: High Schoolers Write Children's Books for 1st Graders

DeLand High School

Goal: If I receive this grant, it will be my sixth time doing this project. (We first did this project in spring of 2019.)

My goals for my Creative Writers are these:

To use the writing process to develop, write, revise, proofread, illustrate, and publish children’s books for a real audience, and then to deliver them to that audience – selected first graders at Blue Lake Elementary. This process encompasses many skills, and requires a high degree of time management, creativity, and self-motivation. Unlike most writing done in school, this writing will be for a real audience - the first grader they are writing for. It is often said 'the best way to learn is to teach it yourself'. By allowing students to write, publish, and read their book to an elementary student...they are effectively teaching that student their story. It also offers a chance for students to give back to a school they may have attended and to encourage the humanitarian connection between writing and education. The price of books has come down, so I would like to buy additional books for the Early Childhood Development children who attend the “Bullpups” program at DeLand High School as well.

For the past five years, I have had Art students involved in contributing illustrations to some of these books. My goals for these art students are to 1. Give them a chance to collaborate with a writer on an actual published project for a real audience; 2. Help them learn about working on an art project with deadlines; 3. Develop art work from a writer’s words.

My goals for the first graders are these:

Students will develop their love of reading. These students will have a book written especially for them, and this will encourage them to read it. It will be based on their interests and preferences and it will be something they can bring home and keep. Students will be able to use their reading skills to analyze and discuss their books. The creative writing students will using the literary elements of plot, characterization, setting, themes, and irony in creating their stories, so those are elements the first grade students can draw back out of the books.

One String at a Time

Deltona Middle School

The Deltona Middle School Orchestra Program has grown since I started as the director in 2021 and there are now 75 students enrolled in the orchestra program playing violin, viola, cello, or double bass. I am so lucky to have this growth in my program, however higher enrollment in the orchestra program causes extra costs associated with maintaining the orchestra instruments. The most essential and expensive accessory for orchestra instruments are strings. Fresh, high-quality strings are one of the most important factors that can help my students play and sound to the best of their ability in their orchestra ensemble. It is my goal to provide my students with strings for their instruments that deliver great performance and are durable enough to last a long time.

En Español: Promoting student biliteracy through a Spanish-language library collection

Deltona High School

There should be room on library shelves for books that speak to every student, encourage their academic growth, and represent every student's background and experiences. This should include honoring and celebrating students’ home languages and an emphasis on the importance of biliteracy. Deltona High School has a rich and diverse student population, and the books on our library shelves should be a reflection of that richness. The student body of DHS is 46% Hispanic, with robust Spanish-language and ESOL programs. Many of our students are also actively involved in our 'Latinos in Action' leadership course and/or seeking the Florida Seal of Biliteracy through our Cambridge program and other advanced courses of study.

As a result, the goal of this project is to enhance our library collection with a variety of Spanish-language texts to support the needs of our various student populations and encourage their continued academic growth.

Developing Wild Readers

DeLand High School

In her book, 'Reading in the Wild,' Donalyn Miller writes that when students read and identify as readers, they are often more successful academically and socially, with an enhanced sense of future goals and how they can contribute to a civic community. Since the pressure of covering curriculum often does not lead time for students to choose books and engage in authentic reading in class, we would like to offer students the opportunity to read books as a community book club. We want to foster 'wild readers' who are passionate about reading and who can participate in a school culture of conversation surrounding topics in books.

Last year, our school (DeLand High) won first place in the Battle of the Books competition for our district. Our team of students would like to continue our forward momentum and invite new students into the book club. This grant will help support funding and active reading resources so we can compete in the competition again this year.

The following BEST ELA benchmarks will be utilized as a foundation for discussion and activity surrounding the books :
~ELA.10.R.1.1 – Analyze how key elements add layers of meaning/style in a text
~ELA.10.R.1.2 – Analyze and compare universal themes and their development throughout a literary text
~ELA.10.R.1.3 – Analyze coming of age experiences reflected in a text and how the author represents conflicting perspectives.
~ELA.10.R.3.1 –Analyze how figurative language creates mood in text(s)
~ELA.10.V.1.1 – Integrate academic vocabulary appropriate to grade level speaking and writing
~ELA.10.V.1.2 – Apply knowledge of etymology/derivations to determine meanings of words and phrases
~ELA.10.V.1.3 – Apply knowledge of context clues, figurative language, word relationships, reference materials/background knowledge to determine connotative & denotative meanings of words/phrases

Learning is BRIGHT, not Black and White!

Indian River Elementary School

This grant will provide colorful materials in the kindergarten classrooms at Indian River Elementary. My goal is for us teachers to have the option to print color copies when necessary so students can decipher things by color; not just shape or size. We do not have the option to print in color from copy center unless approved well ahead of time and have a specific code. This printer will stay in the Kindergarten pod and allow us to choose certain activities for ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies and Writing to print in color.
Over summer I print an excess amount of colored documents for my classroom: letters for a word wall, the alphabet, numbers and ten frames, number line, I can statements, the daily schedule, calendar, classroom rules and so much more. All these must be different colors so the students can easily differentiate between each concept. If everything was black and white in my room, students wouldn’t have a way to make connections with the learning tools, such as my alphabet, number line, etc.

Creating a Road Map for the Future A Career Exploration and Planning Initiative for Students in Intensive Reading

DeLand High School

The goal of this project is to ignite a passion for career exploration and planning that connects student's interests to career paths. Not only will students be inspired to explore their interests and careers related to their interests, students will also be given opportunities to practice their digital skills. Digitial skills that students will practice include document formatting, organizing data, writing strategies, effective communication, e-mail features, identifying relevant data, internet search strategies, project management, spreadsheet organization, digital collaboration, video conferencing, resume writing, using a document template and internet safety. Students will also be given tasks that allow them to work on social emotional skills necessary for the workforce such as self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, relationship skills and self-management skills. As students interact with the text, resources and complete project-based learning activities they will be prepared to enter the “ever-changing global workforce” and become “productive citizens”.

The following BEST ELA benchmarks will be utilized as a foundation for career exploration, digital skills lessons, discussion and project-based learning activities:

Let's Bring Learning Outside

Champion Elementary School

I am seeking funding to purchase educational outdoor learning equipment for kindergarten recess. Due to the limited playground space and the size of the school, kindergarten students currently have access to the playground only one day a week. One day a week we are also inside for recess. On the remaining days, students utilize grassy areas for their recess activities. I believe that acquiring outdoor learning equipment will significantly enhance the quality of these recess periods by allowing students to use these ELA and Math outdoor centers to have fun playing while learning at the same time.

The 10 Best (Worst) Things About Middle School

Southwestern Middle School

“Ah, middle school. The best (worst) years of your life! The friends, the memories, the life lessons, and of course the...inevitably haunting embarrassments that will leave emotional scars for years to come! Join a group of real-life middle school students as they uncover the wonders (perils) of their first dance, the marvels (horrors) of field trips, the joy (humiliation) of gym class, and many more of the numerous fond (traumatizing) aspects of life as a middle school student.” (Synopsis from https://yourstagepartners.com/the-10-best-worst-things-about-middle-schoolyoung). The 10 Best/Worst Things About Middle School is a comedy play written by M.G. Davidson. The play consists of two main characters with conflicting recollection of their middle school experiences.
One of the primary goals of this project is to allow students additional opportunities to improve their literacy skills in a creative and engaging way through drama. As students work through the production of the play, they will be focusing on many key components of reading comprehension. These components include fluency, vocabulary, character development, tone, conflict, etc. This real-world opportunity will provide students with an authentic purpose for analyzing a text outside of their language arts classroom.
The project will also allow middle school students to collaborate with their peers, analyze characters, learn memorization skills, learn technical theater, light systems, sound systems, backstage duties and responsibilities. It will also allow them to put on a performance, how to influence upcoming middle schoolers, and how to embrace and improve their creative abilities.

Middle Schoolers and Books and Puppets, Oh My!

Southwestern Middle School

Middle schoolers and Books and Puppets… Oh My! Middle school theatre students (6-8) will collaborate with their peers to create puppets based on elementary school books. The Middle schoolers will then present their performance to our local elementary schools. The overall goal is to have students build their literacy skills, analyze children's stories, create a dialogue that encaptures the story, create puppets to support their dialogue, and bring their performance outside of the classroom to local primary grade students.
Both the middle school and elementary school students will have an opportunity to improve their literacy skills through these performances. Middle school students will need to analyze the original texts in detail for key literary elements to adapt their scripts for the puppet theater. They will need to have a thorough understanding of how character development, tone, conflict, word choice, etc. interact in the original text and apply those elements to a new script of their own creation. This level of complex analysis helps support students’ overall reading comprehension and literacy achievement.
This goal will also help the primary students get excited about books they are learning about in the classroom and see the stories come to life from different perspectives. This will help spark an interest and love for reading, creativity and theatre.

Stay in the line, it’s writing time!

Indian River Elementary School

As a new Kindergarten teacher, I am seeing how important handwriting skills really are at an early age. In the classroom, we are always working on our handwriting as well as proper letter formations. These journals will provide a visual with lines (top line, bottom line, and dotted line in between) to show the students where to start their sentence, guide them to make uppercase letters and make lowercase letters the correct sizes. I feel it is important to give kindergarten students a guideline or visual of where to write the words and what size, otherwise they are writing as big as they can, as small as they can, and/or all over the page. My goal is for us teachers to have the students become independent as far as learning how to use their primary journal and add pictures that correlate with their writing. This grant will provide 24 Primary writing journals for each Kindergarten teacher at Indian River Elementary.

Readers of the Pack: Pairing Intensive Reading Students with Deltona High School’s PreK Wolf Pups to Foster Fluency (and Raise Ravenous Readers!)

Deltona High School

In the wild, all members of a wolfpack are responsible for the care and upbringing of each and every member. Contrary to the villainous versions in myths and fairytales, wolves are known for their tight-knit family groups and their nurturing instincts. From hunting for food to teaching essential life skills, wolves go above and beyond to ensure that the entire pack thrives. The same is true at Deltona High School, home of the Wolves. The entire campus works together to support the academic growth of all of our students, from our 9th graders in Intensive Reading all the way down to our Early Childhood PreK Wolf Pups. Our “Readers of the Pack” guest reader program is designed to support the literacy growth of both of these high-needs groups on our campus.

Deltona High School is one of only a handful of Volusia County high schools with an Early Childhood Education Course and a fully functioning PreK classroom. As a result, we have a unique opportunity to support literacy development and spark a life-long love of reading in our youngest pack members by pairing them with high school students for read-aloud opportunities.

Additionally, we have a chance to provide extra literacy support to our students in 9th grade Intensive Reading in an authentic and engaging way as “Guest Readers.” Our new 9th grade students’ reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension still lags behind after years of post-COVID schooling, exacerbated by numerous teacher vacancies. The “Readers of the Pack” program will strengthen their foundational reading skills and provide consistent fluency practice opportunities while also modeling good literacy habits to our youngest wolves. At Deltona High School, the pack takes care of its own.

Mayday! Mayday! You are on an interplanetary mission and your shuttle has crashed on a rocky planet, in the ocean! Your computer control panel is broken. You cannot communicate with the rescue mission. You are lost in space.
“Cadet. Cadet. Do you copy? This is rescue shuttle control. We know this may sound overwhelming, but you need to learn to code and wire so you can fix your destroyed control panel. It will take you exactly thirty days to repair your shuttle and we will guide you through all the steps necessary, from coding to wiring up your fancy new hardware setup.” Where you were once lost in space, you will now be found in space!
This inventive story line launches students into the 30 Days Lost in Space Adventure Kit Challenge. Developed by Florida based InventrKits LLC, the adventure kit inspires middle school students to “problem-solve their way out of all the messy consequences of getting stranded on an alien planet.” Over the course of 30 days, 6th and 7th grade technology students work together to complete a coding and circuits challenge, bringing them from beginner to builder of this clever electronics kit.
The goal of this project and grant is to make coding and electronics wiring entertaining and accessible to students. Students will learn electronic wiring and coding hands-on skills while developing problem solving skills, increasing critical thinking skills, and engaging in teamwork and communication skills to save themselves and fix their spaceship. The InventrKits Adventure Kit 30 Days Lost in Space will provide students with an opportunity to learn these valuable skills in a fun and engaging way and will be an excellent addition to Ormond Beach and Hinson Middle School’s STEM program.

This FUTURES Grant request is to provide students with commercial food-safe servers and food storage containers for their hot lunch sales.

Found in Space II

Hinson Middle School

Mayday!

'A CLAY in the Life'- Elementary Artists Make Landscape Post Cards to Make a Difference

Champion Elementary School

Each year, my students and I together decide on the theme and plan projects for the following year. In June, I announced that this school year our focus will be on our beautiful state of Florida. I will be teaching students about the species of plants, animals, and insects which are indigenous to Florida. In addition to wildlife, we will be learning about some of Florida's important landmarks and historical locations as well. We will be applying what we know within our art projects-which hopefully can make an impact and help bring awareness to students and the community of the importance of protecting our Florida wildlife, and learning about the history as well. With this knowledge, students were involved in the planning process by providing project ideas, and ideas to further our learning this year.
Our goal at large is to create art that can make a difference in the community-by raising environmental awareness.
My goal for this project is to provide a very hands on, engaging activity for students with clay. We will call these 'landscape post cards'-although they will not be physically mailed, they will be a similar size.

Thready to have SEW much fun!

Champion Elementary School

I have two goals for this project. My ultimate goal for this project is to teach 4th and 5th grade students the life skill that is sewing.
My second goal (also very important), is to receive the funding to provide the school with two sewing machines, for learning purposes.
Sewing and tailoring is unfortunately an art form and career that is not as popular as it was years ago. With this, the skill has been less and less used- and many people have lost the knowledge of how useful basic sewing knowledge can be. With working at a Title 1 school, I noticed a lot of students had broken things- torn clothing, bags, and more. I have had students come to me for help in repairing their bookbags, a dress, and more. It has been my hope that I can at least teach them how they can make the repairs on their own, if needed for their futures. It is also a skill that I want to provide-in case this sparks an interest in a future career path for some students.

Art Teachers Do It For The 'Monet'

Taylor Middle-High School

Show them the Monet!!!!
The goal of this project is to introduce my students to Claude Monet and “Plein Air” painting, this French expression means “in the open air”. The artists of Taylor High will leave the four walls of their normal studio space behind and head outdoors to paint and draw the landscapes that our campus has to offer. Students will learn how this practice dates back for centuries but was made into an art form by the French Impressionists, like Monet, the founder of the movement and their desire to capture the ever-changing light. With the recent discovery of transportable paint tubes and the box easel, this allowed the artists the freedom to paint “en plein air” or open air! Students will be provided with portable easels and drawing boards that will allow them the freedom to draw and paint with ease while in the field, they will experience what the Impressionists utilized to capture the images they study today.

Banners of the Arts

Creekside Middle School

Creekside Middle School has an outstanding Arts Department! We all work very independently, and many people don’t even know what we do. As I sat and watched several of their performances last year, I thought it would be cool if my visual arts students created projects based on the performing arts to hang in the cafeteria space where they perform. It is not easy to hang artwork up in the space because of the block walls, but we can hang from the drop ceiling.
I would like to have my students create painted banners based on all art forms. I envision paintings of dancers, musicians, instruments, theater masks, famous artist replicas and poems etc. hanging from the ceiling near the stage and around the edges of the multi- purpose room. This project will not only impact my students , but all of the students, staff, and parents as well, by showcasing what our talented students are doing here in the arts.
