As an instructor in the Criminal Justice Academy, I educate my students on Florida driving laws and the dangers of driving while impaired. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among young people in the United States. Fatal Vision Goggles allow students to experience the affect of being impaired by alcohol while trying to perform ordinary tasks. It is my goal to use the Fatal Vision Goggles during lab activities in all of our criminal justice classes and for school wide educational purposes. My Criminal Justice Club will host school wide events that involve the use of Fatal Vision Goggles while students perform field sobriety tests and other tests of fine and gross motor skills. My goal is for my students to understand that alcohol distorts perceptions, impairs balance and judgement, and makes ordinary activities difficult. Most of all I hope to make my students understand that drinking and driving is a potentially deadly decision. Other teachers in the Criminal Justice Academy will use the Fatal Vision Goggles in their classes as well.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 180

In my classroom, students experienced alcohol impairment while wearing the Fatal Vision Goggles and trying to perform activities that use fine motor skills that included giving a fist bump, picking up a paper clip and placing it in a container, typing a message on a keyboard, writing their name on lined paper, turning a light switch on and off, filling a small cup with water, and drinking the cup of water without spilling it.

Using gross motor skills, students wore the Fatal Vision Goggles while trying to walk on a straight line for 20 feet, raise one leg while standing on the other for one minute, throwing a ball into a bucket ten feet away, catching and throwing a ball with another student six feet apart, dribbling a ball, doing squats, and walking to the water fountain and getting a drink.

Each student wearing the Fatal Vision Goggles was paired with a peer spotter to assist the impaired student navigate a course of ordinary tasks to perform.  There were many laughs as we watched each student work their way through the course.  All of my students were amazed by the challenges and difficulty in performing these basic tasks when wearing the goggles.  Many students were not on the straight line as they took their steps to the end of the line. After removing their goggles, they were shocked to see that they were not on the line!

I believe the Fatal Vision Goggles made a profound impact on the awareness and attitudes of my students toward drinking and driving.  Some students acknowledged that the experience left them not wanting to drink alcohol at all.  All students were surprised they experienced difficulty performing simple tasks.  Many students had difficulty keeping their balance and judging distance.  Some students walked into walls and lockers!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

With the Fatal Vision Goggles, students will experience how alcohol impairs a person’s balance, vision, reaction time, and judgment. The Fatal Vision Goggles requested in this grant are designed to simulate the affects of alcohol impairment at two levels of blood alcohol concentration: .17 to .20 and .25 and above. I intend to use the Fatal Vision Goggles in both indoor and outdoor activities. In my classroom, students will experience being impaired while trying to perfom activities that use fine motor skills such as drinking from a cup, picking up a set of keys or paper clip, touching an item that is in front of their face, writing their name on a piece of paper, typing on a keyboard, and turning on a light switch. A second activity will be held outdoors with students trying to perform activities using gross motor skills such as walking a line, raising one leg for one minute, throwing a ball into a basket, having a catch with another student, giving a high five to another student, dribbling a ball, doing squats, and riding a bike. Throughout the school year, I will have all the criminal justice students and other classes use the Fatal Vision Goggles to experience the affects of alcohol impairment. While all of these activities are taking place, students who are not actively participating are observing the participants and noting their level of diminished skills and impairment during these exercises. All students will then write a reflection on their experience.

Benefits to my students

Simple activities such as writing one's name, reaching for a set of car keys, drinking from a cup, tossing a ball, and walking a line become difficult as students realize
the potentially dangerous consequences of alcohol impairment. Through the use of the Fatal Vision Goggles, my students will experience the effects of alcohol impairment on their perceptions and their fine and gross motor skills. As observers of the activity, students will see how other participants demonstrate impaired judgement and skills. This activity will follow a study of statistical data about the use of alcohol and other drugs among teens and the annual number of alcohol and drug related vehicle crashes. The research and lab activities are designed to encourage my students to make positive choices regarding the use of alcohol and drugs and to develop resposible attitides about drinking and driving.
