Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

I am incredibly grateful to have received a classroom grant from the FUTURES foundation. Through this grant, I was able to buy a class set of books to support our read aloud sessions. This generous contribution will have a lasting impact on our students by enabling them to fully engage with the stories, foster deeper comprehension, and inspire meaningful discussions. With this resource, our classroom will come alive through the shared experience of reading together. It empowers me as an educator to create enriching lessons and nurture a love for literature among my students, which is truly invaluable.

The impact of the FUTUREs grant I received was an increase in student engagement, building on skills associated with benchmarks, and enhanced the learning environment. Every student in the classroom was enthusiastic about reading and answering the comprehension questions. While reading, I would provide students the opportunity to read aloud to the class. Then, I would pose higher-level thinking questions, blending benchmarks to create an enriching learning space.  Through this book study, the students learned about figurative language and idenitfied several different types of it throughout the book. For example, similes, onomatopeia, and alliteration. We had a "writing packet" activity that we used to collect information from the book. We identified causeand effects, summarized the story, and used the "SWBST" (Somebody, Wanted But, So, Then) strategy. There were several opportunities for collaboration and peer learning through discussions. The students were excited to use their own copies of the book that was highly recommended by our media specialist. The grant allowed each student to have a physical copy of the book allows students to annotate, re-read, and engage more deeply with the material, fostering critical thinking and comprehension skills. As an educator, I was able to plan engaging, cohesive lesson plans that encourgaed my reluctant readers to participate and practice their speaking voice. The book we used for the book study was titled, "Night Frights: The Haunted Mustache" by Joe McGee. This was an SSYRA book last year and the students were allowed to take an Accelerated Reader (AR) quiz on it when we completed the clsas read aloud. Then, media specialist provided "brag tags" and a fake mustache for the students when they passed the quiz. They also received a quick check of their comprehension at the end of our read aloud.

Thank you for your generosity and for investing in our students’ education. Your support is making a difference, and we are deeply appreciative of this opportunity to enhance their learning journey.

Warm regards,

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for this classroom grant is to create an immersive reading experience for students. This will fortify their comprehension, fluency, and love for reading.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

To begin, I will introduce the book to the class. As we go through the books, we will discuss the text features, the theme, and central idea. Throughout the chapters, we will point out the relevant details and how they connect to the central idea. One activity we will do throughout the read aloud is create a poster about the students' favorite sport and why. Another activity we will do asks students to pick their favorite character and describe why. They will draw a picture of that character and write a connection that they made to that character (text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connection). At the end of this reading and activities, we will do a book tasting. The students will submit their favorite book title, and we will choose the top books to include in our book tasting.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of this are to build on their fluency and reading comprehension. In addition, the students will reinforce their knowledge of text features, central idea, and how to correctly distinguish relevant details within a passage. I want to nurture students love for reading independently and chorally. There will be opportunities for interactive experiences and cross-curricular lessons.
The sensory wall tiles will foster a calming reading environment for students who get overwhelmed during choral reading. Some students go to the reading corner, which doubles as the calm down corner to self-regulate. I have several students who utilize that area when they become overstimulated in the classroom.

Budget Narrative

The books requested are a classroom set and they are SSYRA books. They will be utilized for classroom read alouds and will align with the following standards: ELA.3.R.2.2, ELA.3.R.3.2, and ELA.3.R.2.1. The sensory wall tiles will support the students who need to self-regulate when becoming overstimulated.
