Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 88

My students spent the year experimenting, identifying minerals and elements, cracking geodes nd examining soil composition.  67 entered our first Science Fair for my School in many years, 16 of them qualified to go on to district competition where one ultimatly took an award!  We were invited to attend "WISER Women", a challenge for women in science through Embry Riddle University and the ladies were honored guests!  The year flew by and we have ended with a Science Exhibition where 57 of my students showcased their work from this exciting year for parents and staff.  We showed their Powerpoints on the big screen, had refreshments and science demonstrations, and each student set up their own table highlighting their favorite activities in class this year; some showcased crystals and geodes, some had favorite experiments or a scientific toy or game they developed and some had their children's stories about elements and natural cycles on display.  The students had the opportunity to read their stories to the middle school kids earler this month; favorites were "Knights of the Periodic Round Table" by Daniela Soto and "Carl the Carbon Atom's Big Adventure" by Karen Gonzalez.  It was an exciting year and we have several students already preparing for next year's Science Fair!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to instill learning and make a lasting impact with physical science hands on experiments and activities for my students.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

Students will have opportunities to explore the physical world of motion, forces and matter through a series of experiments and activities that compliment their regular textbook curriculum. Students will explore mass and density in rock formations with Geodes(SC.912.P.10.4). They will learn about ocean creatures, filter feeders and species survival when we study how Oysters and cyanobacteria survived the mass extinctions(SC.912.L.18.7). We will discover Newton's laws of motion and see them in action as we build dragsters and put them through their paces(SC.912.P.12.3) We will make rainbows, get power from fruit, learn different ways of propulsion and build our own propeller driven model cars(SC.912.P.10.1). We plan to use a windmill and a water turbine to operate a simple machine(SC.912.E.7.1). We will experience night vision(SC.912.P.10.5), and determine, through the properties of water, if water is wet(SC.912.L.18.12). We will taste chemical reactions and changes in states of matter through a unique "picnic" in our lab(SC.912.P.8.2), and I plan to send these experiences home so the students may try them with families as well.

Benefits to my students

The high interest activities and personal participation will excite and engage my students in the learning experience. The things that go home will encourage discussion and parent interest in their students exploration. The hands on experiences create lasting memories and cement learning into the minds of these young leaders. I hope to see fantastic attendance, high motivation and I have high expectations for the students products.

Budget Narrative

I shopped Amazon, Walmart, Class Wallet, Ollies, Big Lots and TEMU to find the best and lowest prices for the elements needed to make these experiences happen. I have many supplies already on hand and am only asking for money to purchase consumable supplies or things I do not have.
