Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1200

Thanks to Futures Foundation, I was able to introduce students to linocut block printing. This would not have been possible otherwise. So, thank you.

Among my students, the impact was far reaching. Further, I am of the point of view that the whole student body at Atlantic was positively impacted as I installed a selection of the final pieces, as many as I could fit, in a public display case on campus.

For many students, drawing does not come easy. For those students in particular, this project was especially beneficial. In most cases, these students were able to create something they were proud of, taking a giant step toward building the art confidence that they lack. And toppling that stumbling block opens the pathway to further creativity.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To expose young artists to a fresh (to them) and tactile manner of indexical mark-making and self-expression.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

Students use linocut tools and related media to artfully carve and then print their own unique hand-crafted Islamic-tile-inspired pattern on paper. The ink for this project is black. The element of color will be added in the negative space to create variant-edition prints. This assignment will touch upon radial symmetry, tessellation, shape, color theory and cultural understanding.

Standards
VA.912.C.2.1
Examine and revise artwork throughout the art-making process to refine work and achieve artistic objective.
VA.912.S.1.4
Recognize examples of elements like color and line and principles like balance, contrast, and movement as visual language capable of expressing symbolic analogies.

Benefits to my students

Administering the proverbial shot-in-the-arm to their "usual" artmaking practice while connecting them to the rich and ancient history of print media.

Budget Narrative

The Soft-Kut (4) is the printing block. Students use the cutting tools (6, 7, 8) to carve into the Soft-Kut block. The ink (5) is used with the brayers (6) to print onto the paper (3) with the black printing ink. The tracing paper (1) is used for transfer onto the block if needed. The alcohol markers (2) are used to fill-in with color to create variant editions.
