Document Cameras and Large Whiteboards to Display Mathematical Problem-Solving and Enhance Collaborative-Learning Engagement

Thank you again to FUTURES for funding the grant for Deltona Middle School’s Math Department to order Document Cameras and additional whiteboards for the classroom walls, both are essential tools to maximize Math learning & instruction.  I reached out to our amazing Math teachers, and received the following feedback on the direct, positive impact on learning and instruction the grant provided us:

As an ESE teacher, I can share that the document camera has been a valuable tool to help students to meet accommodation that most have on their IEP which provides a visual of the information being presented.  The students are allowed the opportunity to also go to the board and practice during direct instruction as information projected from document camera is also the same information in their book which helps to increase student engagement.

The document camera is an invaluable tool for demonstrating how to work out math problems, step-by-step. It is especially useful for teaching graphing linear equations and finding slope, as it is far easier to graph on paper than on a whiteboard. Another use is for showing examples of student work from paper assignments.   The extra whiteboard made it possible for me to move the learning target and success criteria posters from the main whiteboard, allowing me room to work examples. It is also available for the support teacher to use.

The use of a document camera has transformed the learning environment in my class. Now, I can easily display documents such as practice problems, textbooks, etc. so my students can have an enhanced visualization of complex concepts.  The use of a document camera has also fostered a more interactive environment in the classroom. Students’ participation has improved 100% in my class and consequently their testing results.

The whiteboards have been helpful with small group instruction. Placed strategically in the back by the small group table, focused instruction can be implemented on those who need targeted intervention

The document cameras have been very helpful for my class making a huge impact allowing me to demonstrate how to work out equations in front of the whole class without standing in front of the board blocking everyone.  This has been super helpful- also the additional whiteboard has been a great help as whiteboard space is very limited in the room this addition has added space to use and expanded the teaching surface of the room.
