Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

This year students worked with our light boxes and tracing tables funded through this grant to explore light energy. We talked about how we can use materials of different opacities to layer and give our artwork depth or the illusion of depth. For the Science, we used translucent linking cubes and pattern tiles to talk about transparent, translucent and opaque. We talked about how the difference was the amount of light that was able to move through the object and how if shadows are created by light that is blocked by an opaque object. The light tables, translucent blocks, tiles, and other accessories were also used in our centers at the end of each quarter so that all students could experiment with light and color. I wish I had been able to take pictures during the lessons, but we were rushing to get it all done every class period. Attached are pictures from the center days where I was more easily available to take the pictures. 5th grade students are currently working on their project integrating an activity where they complete a circuit that lights up their artwork

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To have students experiment with light and color to engage in innovative art projects that inspire imagination and creativity.

Category

Electronics - Personal computers/tablets/iPads, headphones, charging cables, computer mice, etc.

What will be done with my students

Students will explore the concept of light and value by creating artwork using light pads and Lite Brites. They will explore how light affects the appearance of colors using the Lite Brites and how value changes from light to dark using the light pads. Students share their creations to show how they used light and color to explore value in their artwork. We’ll then discuss how using light pads and Lite Brites help them understand these concepts, what students learned about light and value and what they notice about how light changes colors and creates different values.
As an extension of this activity students in second and third grade will create examples of light and value using the light tables and sand. Fourth grade students will create artwork that utilizes the light tables for tracing and incorporate shadows. Fifth grades students will use the light tables for tracing and further explore the transfer of electrical energy into light energy by creating a closed circuit with LED light diodes, copper tape, and a battery to create artwork that lights up.
This lesson will address many visual arts standards such as
VA.5.S.3.1: Use a variety of materials and techniques to create artworks that reflect the principles of design (e.g., balance, contrast).
VA.2.C.1.2: Describe how different techniques and materials affect the appearance of an artwork. This lesson will also incorporate science standards such as
SC.2.P.10.1: Investigate how light and sound travel through different materials.
SC.2.E.6.1: Explore how natural resources (like light) affect our environment.
SC.3.P.10.4 Demonstrate that light can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed.
SC.3.P.10.3 Demonstrate that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object or travels from one medium to another.
SC.4.P.10.1
Observe and describe some basic forms of energy, including light, heat, sound, electrical, and the energy of motion.
SC.5.P.11.1
Investigate and illustrate the fact that the flow of electricity requires a closed circuit (a complete loop).

Benefits to my students

This lesson provides a hands-on approach to learning about light and value, engaging students with interactive tools, and helping them visually and practically understand these important concepts in art and science.
