Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 61

Thank you Futures Foundation of Volusia County Schools for your generous donation! I was so excited to implement the book clubs in my classroom this spring. I currently co-teach, so I see 46 students total (23 fourth graders in each class), and I also shared the resources with the gifted fourth grade class, so 15 additional students have so far benefitted from the Kate Dicamillo and Roald Dahl novels and use of headphones to create "talk shows" or "podcasts". I estimated that each book took on average four hours to read, so the addition of these resources into my classroom contributed to 488 hours of reading time with each kid reading two books. Students were exposed to classic and new childhood literature and applied the standards we were learning (plot development, conflict, theme, setting, point of view, figurative language, and more) to the books they were reading. Many students finished their book club books early, and then cruised through multiple other books from the unit. Anecodotally, I have heard from multiple parents about how excited they are to see their kids take an interest in reading. Having the students work in heterogeneous groups based on books they chose to discuss literature and the standards made learning engaging and effective. I have learned from my first round of book clubs about what works and what does not, and I am so excited to continue to use the books and headphones next year. Thank you so much, Futures Foundation, for your investment in our students and community members!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

In order to foster a love of reading, provide differentiated instruction, and offer cooperative learning, I hope to implement literature circles/book clubs into my classroom using Roald Dahl and Kate DiCamillo books.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

In accordance with Florida B.E.S.T. Standards ELA.K12.EE.2.1 (read and comprehend grade-level complex text proficiently) and ELA.K12.EE.4.1 (use appropriate collaborative techniques and active listening skills when engaging in discussions in a variety of situations), I plan on hosting book clubs or literature circles. Students will be in groups of 3-5 and will choose one of five different books from a particular author. They will read and/or listen to the book as a team, engage in daily writing responses and discussions, and will record a 'podcast' about their book as a culminating project. The goal would be to implement these book clubs twice during the year. Students would be given structured discussion and writing assignments that correlate with standards we are learning that week.

Benefits to my students

According to Donalyn Miller's "Reading in the Wild", students who don't read childhood classics like Andrew Clements's "Frindle" or Kate DiCamillo's "Because of Winn Dixie" before the end of elementary school will likely never read them. In order to cultivate lifelong readers, and to expose students to a great selection of children's literature before the window of opportunity passes, book clubs empower students with the element of choice, offer the opportunity for discussion and creativity, and provide exposure to excellent age appropriate literature. Furthermore, students will get to share their book reviews and more via a 'Podcast' they create, which provides opportunities for them to practice and showcase their communication and digital literacy skills. I currently teach 46 students (I am departmentalized with another teacher), but I will happily share these resources with the other 4th grade teachers (60 more students). I would use these books and headphones for years to come!

Budget Narrative

The budget for this project would require 10 copies each (so each child could bring book home, if necessary) of five different books from Roald Dahl and five different books from Kate DiCamillo. This would also require the purchase of
