Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Please help us grow our garden! Poinciana STEM is a Title 1 Elementary School in East Boynton Beach. Many of the children have little connection to how food is grown or to the benefits of eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits. Growing up in an urban environment many of them also have little connection to nature in general. We’d like to help enrich their lives in these ways through the creation and maintenance of an organic food producing garden. The students will also help create other wonderful elements for the garden including music and art elements. They will be planting beautiful flowers and creating a butterfly garden to enhance the experience of being outside amongst nature. We also intend to incorporate all the concepts in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to everything in the garden as they are the center of all learning at Poinciana!

Goal

Please help us grow our garden! Poinciana STEM is a Title 1 Elementary School in East Boynton Beach. What will be done with my students

All students will have the opportunity through an after school club, meeting twice weekly, to help with every facet of the garden. This includes planting, weeding, and creating the art and music elements. Ultimately the students will harvest, prepare the soil, and replant. They will learn about plants, beneficial insects, crop rotation, nutrition, and many other concepts. There will also be healthy snacks to keep them going! Most of all, they will learn how to work together towards a common goal and see the fruits of their labor. We hope that we will also be able to have a good enough yield from the garden itself to help with some food insecurity that exists within our own school community.

Benefits to my students

Research has shown that the benefits of having a school garden include connecting children to the environment, promoting physical activity, changing attitudes towards learning, changing eating habits, and fighting childhood obesity. Students will learn that their labor is valuable, they can contribute within a community, and make a difference in the world. They will learn to try new healthy foods and that foods that are good for you can taste really good too! Students will learn that being outside can be a really fun way to play and be with friends!

Budget Narrative

If everyone who laid eyes on this page gave just $5, we would have more than enough to build a fabulous garden experience for the children at Poinciana. I hope you decide to do just that. (If you’d like to do more that is very welcome too!). Some of the costs are higher at the beginning, like preparing the land for planting including irrigation, but we need to have funds available as well for repair of irrigation and replanting as time goes on. We thank you so very much for your willingness to invest in children!
