Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The purpose of this project is to teach students with exceptionalities valuable entrepreneurial skills by guiding them through the process of starting and running a small business. Many of our students learn best through hands-on experiences but have limited opportunities to practice real-world business concepts in a supportive environment. This project addresses that need by creating a breakfast stand operated by students for Moorings Park staff. It provides a safe and structured way for students to develop employability, financial literacy, customer service, and problem-solving skills while also fostering independence and confidence. The primary learning goal is for students to understand the steps involved in entrepreneurship, from business planning to execution , and to gain transferable skills for future employment and independent living.

What will be done with my students

Project Description
a) Describe the project and its activities:
Students will work together to launch a breakfast business on the Moorings Park campus. The project will be broken into several key phases:
Planning Phase: Students will brainstorm ideas, create a business name, decide on menu items, set prices, and develop a marketing plan.
Setup Phase: Using grant funds, students will purchase necessary equipment, supplies, and initial inventory to launch the business.
Operations Phase: Students will run the breakfast stand on designated mornings, taking turns with roles such as cashier, food prep, marketing, and customer service.
Financial Management: Students will track expenses, sales, and profits using simple ledgers or spreadsheets.
Reflection and Growth: The class will review results, identify successes and challenges, and make improvements for future operations.

Our students benefit most from experiential, hands-on learning. While we teach employability and financial literacy in the classroom, this project allows students to apply these skills in a real-world setting.

Benefits to my students

Improved employability skills: Students will demonstrate responsibility, punctuality, teamwork, and communication in a business setting.
Increased financial literacy: Students will understand basic budgeting, profit, and expense tracking.
Stronger problem-solving and decision-making skills: Students will adapt to challenges and make business-related decisions.
