Goal

This project will support the rapid growth of our orchestra and chorus programs by providing a conductor’s podium and specialized bass chairs, addressing both performance quality and student health. With more musicians on stage, many cannot clearly see the conductor, making synchronization and expression more challenging. A podium will ensure all performers can follow visual cues, creating more unified and impactful concerts. Our bass players currently lack proper chairs, which affects technique and risks long-term posture issues. Providing the correct chairs will promote healthy playing habits, improve comfort, and enhance overall musicianship, helping students achieve greater precision, tone quality, and ensemble cohesion.

What will be done with my students

This project will provide a conductor’s podium and specialized bass chairs to meet the growing needs of our orchestra and chorus programs. The podium will be used in rehearsals and performances to elevate the conductor, ensuring all musicians—especially those seated farther back—can clearly see conducting cues for timing, dynamics, and expression. The bass chairs will be used daily in rehearsals to give our bass players the proper ergonomic support for healthy posture, improved technique, and better tone production. Together, these items address the challenges created by our expanding ensembles, enhance the quality and impact of performances, and support the long-term physical well-being and musical growth of our students, benefiting both the classroom environment and the school’s music program as a whole. 

 

Benefits to my students

This project will improve our students’ ability to perform with greater precision, unity, and expression by ensuring all ensemble members have a clear line of sight to the conductor during rehearsals and performances. Bass players will experience improved posture, comfort, and playing technique through the use of proper chairs, reducing the risk of long-term physical strain. These changes will be measured through observable improvements in rehearsal efficiency, tighter ensemble synchronization, more consistent following of conducting cues, and enhanced tone quality from the bass section. Additional feedback will be gathered from student self-reflections, director observations, and performance evaluations at concerts to track both musical growth and physical well-being 

 

Budget Narrative

The grant funds will be used to purchase a conductor’s podium and specialized bass chairs, totaling $1,640. The podium will provide the necessary elevation for the conductor so all musicians, regardless of their seating location, can clearly see conducting cues, improving synchronization and musical expression. The bass chairs will be ergonomically designed to support proper posture and technique for our bass players, ensuring comfort, preventing strain, and enhancing tone production. Both items directly align with our submitted purchase list and are essential investments in improving performance quality, supporting student health, and meeting the needs of our growing orchestra and chorus programs.
