Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The overall purpose of this project is to create a more inclusive, responsive, and engaging learning environment for middle school students in a special education classroom by implementing flexible seating options. This initiative addresses the critical need for sensory and behavioral accommodations that support students with moderate to severe disabilities, many of whom benefit from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies. By offering seating choices that promote comfort, movement, and self-regulation, the project aims to reduce disruptive behaviors, increase time on task, and foster a sense of autonomy and safety in the classroom.

The learning goal of this project is to improve academic outcomes by enhancing student focus, participation, and engagement in instructional activities. Flexible seating will support differentiated instruction and individualized learning plans, helping students meet IEP goals and demonstrate progress in core academic areas such as reading, writing, and math. By aligning the physical environment with students’ behavioral and cognitive needs, this project will contribute to measurable improvements in both academic performance and classroom behavior.

What will be done with my students

This project will introduce flexible seating options into a middle school special education classroom serving students with moderate to severe disabilities. These students benefit from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies and require individualized support to stay engaged and focused.

Flexible seating will include wobble stools, bean bag chairs, balance ball chairs, floor cushions, and standing desks. These options will allow students to choose seating that meets their sensory and behavioral needs, promoting comfort, autonomy, and improved learning outcomes.

The seating will be integrated into daily routines and ABA behavior plans, helping students meet goals such as remaining on task, reducing elopement, and increasing participation in academic activities.
