Goal
Autistic students often have difficulty regulating their emotions during peer and teacher interactions. Unfortunately this frequently results in a lack of friendships. Many of our autisitc students who are in general education experience social anxiety and rejection during free times like recess, bus rides, choose a partner/pair and share, field trips, and lunch conversations.
What will be done with my students
Videos tailored for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) serve as tools in fostering communication, social interaction, and emotional understanding. These videos aim to address the diverse challenges individuals with ASD encounter in navigating social situations.
One significant advantage of social skills videos is their ability to provide visual and structured guidance. This approach aligns with the preferred learning style of many individuals with ASD. Therefore, these videos feature clear and explicit demonstrations of social cues and appropriate conversational behaviors.
Benefits to my students
By breaking down complex social scenarios into manageable segments, videos offer a systematic approach to learning and practicing social skills.
A Cleveland Clinic study showed rates of improvement in social competence and decreased antisocial behavior with the Model Me Kids® videos. The research comes from a 12-week social skills group.
Moreover, social skills videos create a safe and controlled environment for individuals with ASD to learn and rehearse social interactions.
Budget Narrative
Social Skills Training Visuals:
Each scene lasts between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, depending on the chapter. At the end of each chapter is a storyboard summarizing the rules demonstrated and photos illustrating the rule laid out in story form
Social Skills Training Mastery:
Focus on the skills in one or two chapters at a time, depending on the abilities of the particular child. Once the skill is mastered in a variety of settings, move on to a new chapter while practicing and maintaining the rules already learned.
Practice & Generalization:
Due to the difficulty that students with Autism Spectrum Disorder have in generalizing skills, once a skill or rule is understood, it is important to practice it in a “real world” environment.
