Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

a) The purpose of this project is to foster a love of reading and increase student literacy through access to the full collection of the 2025–2026 Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books for grades 3–5. These highly engaging titles promote reading for pleasure, build reading stamina, and expose students to diverse genres, voices, and themes. Many of my students lack access to new or high-interest books at home or through our limited classroom library. This project addresses the need for student choice, independent reading growth, and equitable access to current literature.

b) The SSYRA Book Club project directly supports Florida B.E.S.T. ELA benchmarks that build independent reading stamina, comprehension, and analysis. As students read across genres, they will summarize texts with attention to theme, plot, and central ideas and explain how relevant details support the central idea in informational texts. Regular reading and discussion of SSYRA titles will improve fluency, accuracy, and prosody and strengthen the ability to analyze an author’s purpose and perspective. Book response projects will support the use of academic vocabulary in speaking and writing, and written reflections will reinforce elaboration and organization. With structured access to high-quality texts and standards-based discussion, students will grow as independent, confident readers and thinkers, all while fostering a love of reading.

What will be done with my students

a) Students will participate in an SSYRA Reading Challenge using the full 2025–2026 Grades 3–5 collection.

Activities include:
-Independent reading during ELA rotations, literacy block, and at home
-Student-created book reviews, posters, and digital reflections
-Peer-to-peer book talks, voting events, and genre-focused discussions
-Participation in school-wide SSYRA activities
-Extension activities such as genre sort challenges, character trading cards, and creative book response projects

b) This project ensures all students, regardless of reading level or access to resources, have the opportunity to engage with current, diverse, and award-nominated literature. The wide range of genres supports personalized reading choices and builds literacy confidence, especially for reluctant readers. This project will enhance my classroom library offerings and support our school-wide goals tied to SSYRA participation and reading engagement.

Benefits to my students

a) Students will increase their independent reading volume, improve fluency and comprehension, and build personal reading identities. They will explore diverse genres and authors, helping them become more confident and motivated readers. The visibility of these books will create a culture of reading that extends beyond the classroom.

b) Outcomes will be measured through:
-Reading logs and student self-reflections
-Book review submissions and class discussions
-Participation in school SSYRA activities
-Observation of increased book check-outs and reading stamina

If this project is funded, students will be able to access, engage with, and respond to high-quality, current literature that promotes both academic success and a lifelong love of reading.
