Goal
The purpose of this project is to transform my third-grade classroom into a more inclusive, student-centered environment by incorporating flexible seating options. By offering choices like saucer chairs, floor cushions, donut ball chairs, and faux fur rugs, I aim to support students’ physical comfort, improve focus, and promote engagement—ultimately leading to better academic outcomes. This project supports the following goals:
Increase student engagement and time-on-task during independent and group work.
Improve classroom behavior and reduce off-task interruptions by providing physical comfort and sensory regulation options.
Foster student choice, collaboration, and self-regulation.
Create a warm, welcoming environment that enhances student motivation and readiness to learn.
Although not directly tied to specific content standards, flexible seating indirectly supports all academic goals by creating conditions that allow students to focus, collaborate, and participate more effectively in learning activities.
What will be done with my students
With this grant, I will create several flexible seating zones within my classroom using a variety of seating options that allow for movement, comfort, and choice. These seating options will be available during reading, writing, math centers, independent work, and collaborative activities. Flexible seating addresses the social-emotional, behavioral, and academic needs of diverse learners. Some students need the calming texture of a rug or the motion of a donut chair to concentrate. Others thrive when given agency in where they work. By allowing movement, sensory input, and comfortable options, this project helps students self-regulate, stay engaged, and feel valued as learners.
Benefits to my students
Expected improvements include increased engagement during lessons and independent work time, fewer behavioral redirections and disruptions due to off-task behavior, improved student self-awareness and self-regulation when making learning choices. Outcomes will be measured by student self-assessment reflections on seating choices and their effectiveness and anecdotal records and teacher notes during small group instruction and independent work.
Budget Narrative
These items directly align with the project’s purpose of creating a flexible, inclusive, and engaging learning environment. Each piece will serve as part of a purposeful seating system that allows students to make positive, personalized choices about their learning space. Flexible seating will meet the physical, emotional, and academic needs of diverse learners, leading to greater engagement, focus, and ownership of learning. Your support will make a lasting difference in how my students feel, behave, and perform at school.
