Goal
The academic goal of this project is to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, and engagement by providing access to high-quality texts and building a positive reading culture in the classroom. Students will deepen their understanding of nonfiction and fiction texts through weekly reading, discussion, and personal goal setting. This project aligns with third-grade reading standards and supports a literacy-rich environment.
What will be done with my students
This literacy-focused project will provide each of my third-grade students with a subscription to Scholastic News, a class set of this year’s Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books, and reading incentives including treasure box prizes, award certificates, and ribbons. Scholastic News provides engaging, grade-level nonfiction articles aligned with our standards. It helps students improve informational reading skills and supports cross-curricular learning (science, social studies, current events). The Sunshine State Books are carefully selected to promote a love of reading and offer high-interest, age-appropriate chapter books. These titles motivate students to read more independently and with purpose. Reading incentives such as small treasure box prizes, certificates, and ribbons will be used to celebrate milestones like finishing books, meeting reading goals, participating in discussions, or showing improvement. These resources directly address the needs of my students by providing access to authentic, high-quality reading material and positive reinforcement for developing strong reading habits.
Benefits to my students
Students will strengthen their ability to read and understand both fiction and nonfiction texts. The combination of engaging materials and incentives will help reluctant readers become more enthusiastic and consistent. Exposure to diverse texts will expand vocabulary, critical thinking, and oral language skills. Certificates and prizes will encourage students to take ownership of their learning and celebrate success.
Budget Narrative
Each item directly supports the academic and motivational goals of this project. The magazines and books improve access to engaging content, while the awards and prizes encourage consistent participation and reinforce the joy of reading. This grant will help foster a classroom culture where literacy is celebrated, effort is rewarded, and every student is supported in their journey toward becoming a confident, capable reader.
