What will be done with my students

Using A Long Way Down as our anchor text, students will participate in literature circles, guided discussions, and reflective writing activities that explore the novel’s themes of grief, identity, and choices. Students will also complete a culminating project that may include creative interpretations such as one-pagers, dramatic monologues, or visual story maps. These activities will not only align with our ELA standards but will also help students connect the text to their own lives and communities in meaningful ways.

Benefits to my students

This novel speaks directly to the emotional and social realities many student’s face. Having access to A Long Way Down will offer them a voice and a mirror. Through this shared reading experience, students will build empathy, literacy skills, and confidence in their ability to have meaningful class discussions. The themes and structure of the book, written in verse, also make it accessible and engaging for reluctant readers, encouraging even the most hesitant students to finish a novel and feel proud of that accomplishment.

Budget Narrative

Grant funds will be used to purchase individual copies of A Long Way Down for each student, ensuring equitable access to this impactful novel. These materials directly support our literature-based curriculum by enabling literature circles, standards-aligned projects, and reflective writing activities that foster engagement, comprehension, and personal growth.
