Goal

The overall purpose of this project is to fund 6 colored pens for each student in my class. The students will use the colored pens to assist them in editing their writing. Editing writing is part of the writing standards, and the use of colors will help to pinpoint different parts of the writing that either a student has or needs to add.

Category

School supplies - Markers, paints, paper, crayons, clay, pencils, sharpies, modeling dough, etc.

What will be done with my students

Every day students write on a topic. According to the writing standards, students must go through the editing and revising process, in order to produce a successful piece. Students will use different color pens to point out different aspects of their writing that might need to be adjusted. For example, students might use one color to underline the topic sentence in each paragraph. They will use another color to underline each quote in a paragraph, and so on. Not only can the students edit their own papers, but their peers can edit each other's papers and mark the paper with the different colors. By either checking their own papers or by once receiving the paper back from a peer, the owner will know what to look for due to the meaning of the different colors. They will understand if the paper is lacking a specific required aspect, or if they have that aspect. Usually these pens last 1-3 years, so these pens will be for multiple years.

Benefits to my students

If this project is funded, my students will be able to meet 5th grade writing standards. Students will benefit from this color editing system because it will help them to organize the editing process, which will assist them in being able to identify different aspects of their writing. It will also benefit the students, as well as the teacher, when their paper is edited by others, including by the teacher. If a word or a section is identified in a specific color, the students have an idea as to what exactly needs to be addressed, which helps to save time from having a discussion about what needs to be adjusted. The successful outcomes will be measured by the score on their writing rubrics for each writing sample.

Budget Narrative

This budget is to request funds of $71.00 for 25 students to have 6 different color pens each, as well as a replacement pen for if the ink runs out in the first pen. The students will use these pens daily to help improve their writing scores to meet the writing standards. The pens will be able to be use for the next couple of years too.
