What will be done with my students

Scholastic News will be used weekly to support reading, writing, discussion, and cross-curricular learning. Each monthly issue provides high-interest, age-appropriate nonfiction articles that align with state standards and literacy goals.

It can be implemented in various ways. For example, whole class reading and discussion to support reading comprehension strategies such as predicting, questioning, and summarizing using text based evidence to support opinions. Working independently or small groups to highlight vocabulary, reread for fluency, answer comprehension questions, complete graphic organizers and write summaries of the article topics.

Scholastic News provides students with knowledge of cross-curricular subjects such as Social Studies articles on current events, historical figures, or civic issues that support curriculum standards. In addition, there are Science concepts that include STEM-focused articles that prompt scientific inquiry and vocabulary development.

With the Scholastic News subscription, we will have access to online resources and tools such as videos, activities and projects for students to have extension learning opportunities.

Benefits to my students

By implementing Scholastic News into the classroom, students can improve in various aspects. Academically, they will improve reading fluency and vocabulary, become stronger in comprehension, and have better writing and language skills. With engaging, age-appropriate and relevant topics, students feel connected to the real world and make them informed and empowered to help them make decisions and also ask questions. Students practice respectful conversation, listening, and debate on real issues, building their social and communication skills.

Budget Narrative
