Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The purpose of this project is to enhance student engagement, comprehension, and retention across core subject areas by integrating Flocabulary, a digital learning platform that uses hip-hop and rhythm-based videos to teach academic content. This initiative addresses the critical need for differentiated instruction and increased student motivation—especially for learners who struggle with traditional teaching methods. Many students benefit from multimodal learning approaches, and Flocabulary offers visual, auditory, and kinesthetic experiences that help students connect more deeply with content.

In today’s classrooms, educators face the challenge of reaching diverse learners, including English language learners, students with learning differences, and those from varying cultural backgrounds. Flocabulary is designed to make academic vocabulary and complex concepts more accessible and relevant, meeting students where they are and helping to close the engagement and achievement gap.
This project supports the broader educational goal of fostering engaged, independent learners who are motivated to succeed academically through innovative, culturally relevant teaching methods for students at all learning levels and ethnic backgrounds.

What will be done with my students

Daily or weekly instructional videos aligned with current classroom units (ELA, math, science, social studies, and SEL).

Interactive vocabulary and comprehension activities, including quizzes, lyric writing, and reading passages to reinforce learning.

Student-created rhymes or raps to demonstrate understanding of concepts in creative, expressive ways.

Classroom discussions and writing prompts that stem from Flocabulary content, promoting critical thinking and collaborative learning.

Differentiated instruction using Flocabulary’s tiered vocabulary and built-in scaffolds to support English language learners, struggling readers, and advanced students alike.

Teachers will integrate Flocabulary into whole-group instruction, small-group centers, and independent practice to meet diverse learning styles. The platform will also be used as a tool for review before assessments and as an intervention for students needing additional support.
This project leverages music, media, and student voice to make learning more inclusive, effective, and fun—fostering a classroom environment where all students can succeed.

Benefits to my students

Increased engagement and motivation: Students will be more enthusiastic about learning due to the music-based, culturally relevant approach to instruction.
Improved vocabulary acquisition: Students will learn and retain more academic vocabulary, which will support their reading comprehension, writing, and performance across all subjects.
Enhanced comprehension and critical thinking: The platform’s videos and follow-up activities promote deeper understanding of content, encouraging students to make connections and analyze material in meaningful ways.
Greater participation and confidence: As students relate to the content and see themselves reflected in the format, they are more likely to contribute in discussions and take ownership of their learning.
Stronger performance on classroom assessments: With improved vocabulary and understanding, students are expected to perform better on quizzes, writing assignments, and standardized test prep tasks.
Measured with:
Vocabulary assessments: Before-and-after quizzes (built into Flocabulary or teacher-created) will be used to track vocabulary acquisition and retention.
Student engagement tracking: Teachers will track student participation in class discussions, completion of Flocabulary assignments, and use of student-created content (like rhymes, raps, and responses).
Reading comprehension scores: Teachers will compare reading assessment data from before and after Flocabulary integration to monitor improvements in comprehension.
Writing samples: Student writing will be evaluated for use of academic vocabulary, clarity, and content understanding over time.
Anecdotal evidence and student feedback: Reflections, surveys, or quick exit tickets will be used to gather student input on how the platform is affecting their learning and motivation.

Budget Narrative

This year I used the trial version of Flocabulary for a short period of time. The students towards the end of the year remembered clearly the grammar lessons and inferential comprehension skills.
This grant would provide a sustainable, standards-based tool that can be used daily to enrich instruction and improve academic outcomes across the curriculum.
