What will be done with my students

Literature Circles & Small Group Reading – Students will read in small groups, with structured discussions guided by comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, and historical context exploration. Reading Response Journals – Students will keep journals to reflect on character experiences, draw connections to real historical events, and analyze themes such as justice, resilience, and identity. Cross-Curricular Projects – Students will complete creative projects such as writing diary entries from a historical character’s perspective, creating timelines, or performing dramatic readings that reinforce both ELA and social studies skills. Classroom Displays & Book Talks – Students will create visual displays and share book recommendations with peers, promoting a reading culture and peer-to-peer engagement.

Benefits to my students

Develop stronger reading comprehension skills, especially in making inferences, identifying themes, and understanding context.Gain a deeper understanding of historical events and perspectives, aligning with state social studies standards. Build empathy and critical thinking skills by exploring diverse characters and cultures. Become more motivated readers, as they engage with meaningful, story-driven content instead of just textbooks.
Improve in writing and communication skills through reading response journals, literature discussions, and creative historical projects.

Measured By:
Analyze journal entries to assess understanding of historical themes and personal connections.
Teacher Observations: Note changes in student engagement, reading stamina, and participation in class discussions.
Student Surveys: Use pre- and post-project surveys to gauge shifts in attitudes toward reading and history.
Group Presentations: Students will collaborate in small groups to create and present a project that demonstrates their understanding of a historical time period and its connection to the themes, characters, and events in a historical fiction text.

Budget Narrative

My desire is to help my students find a love for history through historical fiction. My classroom library has limited books. I would use these books for independent reading as well as read aloud books. Integrating historical fiction into the ELA class brings history to life while developing critical reading, writing and comprehension skills.
