Goal
This collaborative art project for students in grades 6–8 is designed to highlight the magic that happens when young artists join forces. By working together on group art pieces and community installations, students will explore the power of teamwork, creativity, and shared purpose. The project aims to inspire a sense of unity, celebrate diverse perspectives, and show how art can bring people together to create something truly meaningful.

What will be done with my students
In celebration of Surrealism, our 6th–8th grade artists will embark on a collaborative journey inspired by the Surrealist game Exquisite Corpse. Each student will contribute a drawing of either a head, middle, or legs on one side of a cardboard cube. These cubes will come together to form a whimsical, dreamlike installation that showcases the power of imagination and teamwork.
What is “Exquisite Corpse”?
Exquisite Corpse is a collaborative drawing game invented by Surrealist artists in the 1920s. Each participant draws a section of a figure—without seeing the others’ contributions—resulting in a surprising and often fantastical composite image. The Surrealists used this technique to tap into the unconscious mind and create images that were, in the words of poet Simone Kahn, “unimaginable by one brain alone.”
What is Surrealism?
Surrealism is an art movement that emerged in Europe after World War I. It sought to unlock the creative potential of the unconscious mind by depicting dreamlike, illogical, and often bizarre scenes. Surrealist artists believed in the power of surprise, chance, and collaboration—values that are at the heart of this project.
Why This Project?
This installation celebrates the magic of collaboration and the joy of creating something unexpected together. It encourages students to embrace spontaneity, trust the creative process, and see how their individual contributions become part of a larger, imaginative whole.
Benefits to my students
Art installations are a Form of Communication. Art projects come and go. Art installations are here to stay. They are a legacy, a means for students, staff, and stakeholders to communicate from generation to generation. Art installations are an artistic dialogue serving to provoke and inspire present and future student populations. AND “EXQUISITE CORPSE” IS DOWN RIGHT FUN. Just envision students and staff enjoying these sculptures in the most unexpected place!
