Goal

These items with be used to meet the individual sensory needs of students resulting in increased sustained focus, attention and participation.

What will be done with my students

Items will be introduced to students who need sensory input prior to a learning activity. Teacher or para help student use the item and note which activity or activities will help a student remain focused and calm. Students will be taught how to use, access and ask for sensory items using various forms of communication (sign language, communication board, pointing to pictures, verbal). Student will then have access to items prior (or during) to whole group learning activity. The student may choose prior (or during) to Learning Centers and small group learning rotations. The student wearing vest or weighted item will be using items less than 20 minutes. The student using spinning or vibrating item will only have access for a designated period of time. Time will be measured by visual and/or auditory timer or count down system.

Benefits to my students

Students using spinning or vibration items prior to learning activity will give students proprioceptive and vestibular input (awareness of body position/movement, and awareness of balance/head movement/spatial orientation) resulting in calming because it helps regulate the nervous system and organize what they are feeling. The gentle pressure provided by stretch bands, weighted blankets and vests give a calming effect because it stimulates a "hug" or swaddle effect. A calm, regulated student is able to have better focus and participate in classroom activities without seeking other sensory input to meet their needs (i.e.; running, crashing, climbing within the classroom).
