Goal

The goal is to promote versatility and effectiveness in the visual-spatial skills and spatial reasoning while promoting STEM skills. 

What will be done with my students

The students will utilize the magna-tiles to manipulate and experiment with construction of nets, square pyramids and rectangular prisms. The tiles can be used during whole group instruction, small group instruction and for project-based learning (PBL). Students will be able to create nets and demonstrate the construction of a 3-d figure, therefore promoting critical thinking and problem solving to find the surface area of a figure.

The magna-tiles will be used to replace the current 3-d figures and nets we use during instruction. The current 3-d figures do not promote student engagement to create and manipulate the individual tiles for critical thinking and problem solving. 

Benefits to my students

The benefit for the students is that they can be creative and use critical thinking to find the surface area, area, perimeter and volume of geometric shapes. The tiles are a creative way for the students to engage in Project Based Learning (PBL), (which is now being required each 9 weeks of the school year) and collaborate with their peers. The tiles will help students build social skills and work together to achieve a common goal. 

Budget Narrative

The grant will supply 4 math classrooms with enough tiles to disseminate to 280 students. The students will be able to continue their projects each day without have to take them apart for the next class. Each of the four classes will receive 2 set of 100 pieces of tiles @$119.99 for each set, minus a %15 educator discount.

4 classes x 2 sets x $119.99 – 143.99 (15%) = $815.93 (No sales tax collected from this company in Florida)

Each of the 4 math classes will be supplied with a storage bin for the Magna-Tiles @24.99, minus a %15 educator discount, no sales tax collected from this company in Florida.
4 classes x $24.99 -14.99 (15%) = $84.97
8 Magna Tile sets + 4 storage bins is a total of $963.61
$815.93 + $84.97 = $900.90
