Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Our goal is to blend Language Arts with modern technology in a way that will foster an appreciation for writing and an understanding of emerging technological skills that can assist them in the future. We would like to purchase a 3d engraver for the purpose of engraving student written poems onto plaques that they will be able to keep, and cherish forever. This unique medium will last for years longer than a paper on the Fridge. It will also expose students to a technology that is fast becoming a popular secondary source of income for many people.

Goal

Our goal is to blend Language Arts with modern technology in a way that will foster an appreciation for writing and an understanding of emerging technological skills that can assist them in the future. What will be done with my students

We will have students write their own poem during our poetry unit, each year. Instead of putting it on paper that is often lost or discarded, we will engrave them along with the student's name on small plaques for them to take home and cherish. The costs of purchasing wood and maintaining the engraver could be offset after the initial donation by using it to sell other items like engraved mugs, tumblers ect. However, the primary use would be for ELA students

Benefits to my students

Blending technology with poetry can increase student interest and engagement. Poetry is now part of the B.E.S.T. Standards and will be part of the state test. Poetry is often seen as out of date and "Old Fashioned". blending it with emerging technology like laser engraving, and perhaps later 3d printing would be a great way to revitalize it. Middle schoolers often struggle with poetry, because they struggle to relate to it. This could be the ticket to get them engaged and then they would also receive a keepsake of their own words engraved in a wooden plaque upon completion in the unit. Our students struggle with Figurative Language which makes the success of the poetry unit essential to their success.

Budget Narrative

Both items will be ordered from Amazon.com This will cover initial startup, and in future years the wood will be purchased through fundraisers using the engraver.
