Goal
The goal of this learning activity is to enhance an existing unit on lost and endangered languages by adding opportunities for multisensory interaction with materials. It also aims to promote student investigatory research by utilizing project-based learning and additional texts in a local endangered language (Gullah Geechee).
What will be done with my students
After reading the existing unit, students will have opportunities to engage with additional literature and investigate a research project about a lost or endangered language, culminating with a collaboration with local historical experts.
Students will also have the opportunity to present and display their research.
Funding will go towards a field trip with the Gullah Geechee Nation in Fernandina Beach.
Benefits to my students
This extension will engage students by offering insight into a locally-relevant endangered language.
The opportunities to learn from primary source experts on local history and the language in question (Gullah Geechee) will make students a part of their learning experience and allow them to make personal connections to the content and topic.
Budget Narrative
The Literature and Music Resources will be used to purchase books and CDs from the Gullah Geechee nation for use in classrooms.
The Field Trip or Guest Speaker funding will be used to either bring students to a local history museum (American Beach Museum) or bring in a Gullah Geechee speaker to speak to students.
