Goal

The goal of this project is to teach students how to navigate the journey of exploring books and fostering a passion for reading.  

What will be done with my students

Students who face challenges with reading often lack the confidence to explore books of interest, due to concerns about their ability to comprehend the material, limited support at home, or various other factors. In this program, students will collaborate with a club mentor to explore a variety of genres that align with their individual interests. They will have the opportunity to select books, with the mentor providing tailored support throughout the reading process. This support will involve strengthening students' existing reading skills, enabling them to navigate and comprehend sections of text independently. Additionally, students will be provided with tools such as a reader pens to assist with any areas of difficulty to support and help students work through challenges with a sense of self sufficiency and independence. The ultimate goal is to empower students to overcome challenges and foster a sense of independence, encouraging them to persist in their reading development rather than retreating or becoming discouraged during the learning process which in turn will help grow a different and positive perspective on reading.  

Benefits to my students

Club mentors will help student learn to use materials to strengthen independence, continue to encourage their reading growth with incentives that will not only reenforce book club time but also encourage students to work on their reading instruction in the classroom. Club mentor will check in with students classroom teacher to set their classroom goals and help them persist through the challenges in the classroom, and also feel the support of the club members as we all work together to encourage and support each others goals!  

Budget Narrative

The reading pens will support the goal of independence for readers. If students come across a word they may find difficulty, they can write it down on their phonemic awareness dry erase boards first, and with a club mentor work on strategies they may already have to decode the word. After students decode the word, they may use the reader pen to support pronunciation, fluency, or translation depending on the students needs. The goal being that they did not give up or become frustrated with a word they didn't know, but in turn are learning strategies to support and persist through hard tasks, build on their reading strategies, and enhance comprehension. Students will be able to have incentives to support their book club goals with the prize capsule vending machine and prizes. Students will track their reading by listing titles on their book marks as well as rate the books based on their liking as they work through different reads during the clubs duration. Students will learn responsibility and a sense of membership with their book club bags to carry the books selected during club time each week.
