Goal
To give students the opportunity for hands on learning to demonstrate their mastery and application of standard based learning objectives in biology and anatomy & physiology.
What will be done with my students
Students will participate in various lab dissections which enhances student engagement and retention of information. We can take what we have learned and apply it in a practical way by further exploring organisms from our environment.
Benefits to my students
Students have looked forward to annual dissections since I started doing them in 2023. I have 9th grade biology students return to my classroom as 11th graders so that they can participate in the next organism progression with enthusiasm and curiosity that is often lost in many students of the same age.
Statement from a previous student:
"It was the first time I got to dissect something in Ms. Washington’s class that I realized my love for Anatomy. Getting to see the different parts of the body and how they all work together in a learning environment grew my passion for health sciences. Learning about the body is interesting, but being hands on in a classroom with a teacher who has the same passion and drive only amplifies the experience. My personal favorite dissection was the fetal pig, but I am very grateful I got to experience all the dissections. I am now more confident in my future career choice and find myself better prepared for college coursework in Anatomy because of the experience.

Budget Narrative
Grant funds will be used to purchase specimens and I will continue to provide the necessary tools and safety equipment. I reuse as many materials as possible year after year to maximize our reach and minimize waste. Students work in groups to ensure that every student benefits from the experience (even the ones who do not want to directly participate in dissection) and we have the funds necessary to purchase a variety of specimens that correlates with our curriculum.
