Goal
The goal of this project is to use literature (picture books) to engage students in mathematics in a cross-curricular way. The books selected are high interest and will provide a visual presentation of math concepts making the concepts more accessible to all students. The books will introduce math vocabulary for the concepts being taught as well as allow students to analyze and apply math reasoning through discussing the stories.
Research shows that cross-curricular learning helps students to make connections across content areas, gain a deeper understanding of the content, enhance critical thinking skills, and build problem solving skills.
Through these books students will become excited about math and be able to actively engage in their learning. The books will help to engage students in their own learning and reinforce the skills learned in a fun and exciting way.
I want to give students an amazing first year to their educational career and a reason to be excited about coming to school. I believe that engaging students through the use of literature in all content areas can spark the excitement that students need to stay engaged and love learning!
What will be done with my students
These materials will be used in all kindergarten classes at CES. The books have been selected to align with our Kindergarten BEST Math Standards.
They will be used to introduce and reinforce math concepts like counting, shapes, measurement, addition/subtraction, etc. Each book will provide students with opportunities for:
*Engagement - making math accessible to all students in an interesting manner
*Language development - builds vocabulary related to the math skills being taught
*Critical thinking - provides opportunities for students to analyze and apply mathematical reasoning
*Collaboration - providing students opportunities to turn and talk with peers about the math concepts presented
Through the use of stories our kindergarten students will begin to build knowledge of their mathematical concepts and allow opportunities to connect their learning to prior knowledge. Kindergarten is the foundation for future learning.
Benefits to my students
If this project is funded, it would greatly benefit all of our kindergarten students at CES! The use of literature in a cross-curricular manner will allow for students to develop both language and math skills simultaneously. The use of books will also provide a visual connection which will enhance retention of the concepts.
I want students to be excited to come to school, engaged in learning, and have a fun educational experience. I know this grant would help make that happen!
Budget Narrative
This project would benefit all kindergarten students at my school as well as future kindergarten students. We have 12 kindergarten classes and share materials with our neighbor teacher. Six sets of books will all each set of neighboring teachers a set of books. Our grade-level plans together and I am part of the math planning team, these books will be written into our plans based on the Florida BEST Math Standards and our curriculum map.
