Goal

In order to accommodate various learning styles and physical needs, flexible seating aims to give students a range of seating options to enhance their concentration and learning. This will ultimately encourage participation and engagement within the classroom setting. 

What will be done with my students

Students in the ESE (Exceptional Student Education) program in Nassau County are EXCEPTIONAL students. Each student is unique in the way they learn within the classroom. Many of the students in ESE benefit from flexible seating. Seating within the classroom is based upon the student’s individualized needs. There are many considerations with seating in the classroom including sensory impairments, behavior, cognitive needs, physical abilities, posture, and more. Each of these impact learning and attention in the classroom. Some students may require a more supportive seating option due to physical abilities or posture. While other students may need extra movement or heavy input to facilitate learning.  

Benefits to my students

A benefit of flexible seating is the improvement in learning and attention. Students change their activity or attention levels throughout the day. Flexible seating is beneficial when the student is seeking additional movement or proprioceptive input. Some students may need extra movement or heavy input to facilitate learning. The brain functions best when the body is active resulting in improved cognitive ability.  

Budget Narrative

Approximately $1184.69 will be needed to provide flexible seating. The sturdy wooden chairs, wooden foot stools, and slant boards are needed for the students with posture and physical ability concerns to provide more support in their learning environment. The balance boards, rocking chair, scoop rocker chairs, sit and twist, rocking footrest, wobble chair feet, wiggle cushion, wiggle foot cushion, and wobble stool are needed for the students who may seek extra movement or vestibular input. Lastly, the weighted lap pad fidget, ball chair, chair bands, and seating balls are needed for the students who may need additional proprioceptive or heavy input to facilitate learning.
