Goal

The goal of this project is to provide students with opportunities to move within the classroom while learning. I want to be able to support them in their emotional and social development by offering setting alterations and sensory items to help calm their brain. In recent trials within my classroom, I’ve noticed the students that use setting alterations and/or sensory items stay engaged longer without any concern of anxiety and/or distraction’s. I want to teach in an environment that is comfortable for all types of students, desirable for all interest, and beneficial for all learning types.  

What will be done with my students

This grant would help provide my students with hands on materials to help their emotional and social development. Research has been done and proven that movement improves a student’s concentration, helps reduce stress, and increases their learning. The idea behind the grant is to give the students a chance to feel comfortable in a classroom setting while still learning and meet them where they need to be met. For example, the wiggle feet will allow students to move their feet while still learning. It would not cause any distraction to others because it would be on the ground and not making any noise. The sensory stones could be another resource for students to move their body while still learning, it is something small for them to hold and grip while in a classroom setting. The rockers will enhance student concentration while reducing stress, research shows that rocking can offer numerous benefits for mental and emotional well-being(The Many Benefits Of Rocking Chairs: Enhancing Comfort And Well-being - Niche Beverly - Los Angeles, CA). The weighted lap pad could be used for a child that is feeling overstimulated to just have in their lap to help them feel calmer. My goal is for my students to feel comfortable coming to school knowing that their classroom has many resources to help them throughout the day.  

Benefits to my students

If this project is funded, it would significantly benefit my current and future students. My students would be able to have access to opportunities they need to be successful within the classroom. Movement helps students stay concentrated, retain information that is being taught to them, and it makes learning exciting because they aren’t just sitting still all day long. I want my students to experience an environment that is comfortable for all types of students and a place that is desirable for all interest. I know this grant is capable of helping many students now and in the future.  

Budget Narrative

This project would benefit my classroom of 18 students and my future students. I would love to share these ideas with co workers that may also want the same environment within the classroom. Our school works closely with each other and we share personal ideas and/or items, and I would love the share materials with others to allow them to see if this work within their classroom.
