Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

The goal of the Science is life, Social Studies in History project is to provide students with hands on activities that would allow them to review material in an engaging and exciting way! All second graders at CES would have the opportunity to experience these activities. We focus on the science of reading. These tools would be used in classrooms on campus and utilized to help students understand the learning of science and the love of history. We would use the science and history materials based on the unit topics and standards presented in the new Benchmark Reading Curriculum. This project would make 2nd grade students enthusiastic about coming to school, which would positively impact their education. Science experiments (landforms), role-play (famous inventors), and cooperative learning can help spark the excitement students need to stay engaged and love learning!

What will be done with my students

This grant would help to provide hands-on, engaging tools that would excite students about learning, this year and for classes in the future. The idea behind this grant is to give students the opportunity to learn in a experimental and role play classroom/environment. This would allow students to practice and review content for science and social studies while reading through Benchmark material in a fun and memorable way. For example, students will see how parachutes work; Unit 3: Smoke Jumpers or decode a secret message, like what George Washington in Getting a Message to Senator George Washington. Students could learn about the history of famous inventors such as, Mary Anderson, George Whittington Carver and Thomas Edison using different reading skills nonfiction text features, context clues, and central ideas/details to create a wax museum or role play. Cross-curricular concepts would be combined to provide students with a wide range of skills to review. This project based learning style would help students see how all subjects are connected and are important. To make this experience even more exciting, students would also dress up in explorer and experiment natural erosion and states of matter while collaborating with a partner or group to complete hands-on tasks. These items would excite and engage students while making education fun and memorable.
If the grant is funded, we intend to incorporate this project throughout the entire year with one experiment or experience per nine weeks. The themes would correlate with our reading curriculum and include Government Laws (Unit 3), Solving Problems trough Technology (Unit 5), Investigating the Past (Dinosaurs), Earth Changes (Unit 8), States of Matter (Unit 10). Students would experience a new theme every nine weeks and it would include curriculum related, hands-on, group activities, and learning opportunities. The money would be spent to purchase room experiments, materials and hands-on manipulatives for reading, math, and science, that could be used year after year. I would then only need to replenish consumable items for the hands-on experiments as needed. This project would benefit all current 2nd grade students and all future 2nd grade students.

Benefits to my students

If this project is funded, it would greatly benefit all 2nd grade students at Callahan Elementary School. Students would experience the excitement of science experiments and role play, which would lead to increased engagement and learning. Working with groups and practicing with hands-on tools would better enable students to achieve higher level critical thinking and collaborative skills. I want all students to be excited to come to school, engaged in learning, and have a fun educational experience. I know this grant would help make that happen!
This project would benefit all current 2nd grade CES students (around 280 students) and all future 2nd grade classes. The 2nd grade team at CES would collaborate and implement the materials provided from this grant to make learning engaging and exciting!
