Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

I teach both AP and regular level classes. I don't like seeing my students trying to sleep or being bored. One thing I have noticed is that students get restless as the day goes on. By having days and lessons where we go outside and they are moving around, I believe I can combat this student apathy. Every student likes hands-on activities but many don't know how to function as part of a team. My goal is to bring specific exercise equipment into my teaching, by creating activities that reinforce traditional concepts, while having students physically exerting themselves and working together. I will use this summer to create these activities.

Goal

I teach both AP and regular level classes. I don't like seeing my students trying to sleep or being bored. One thing I have noticed is that students get restless as the day goes on. By having days and lessons where we go outside and they are moving around, I believe I can combat this student apathy. Every student likes hands-on activities but many don't know how to function as part of a team. My goal is to bring specific exercise equipment into my teaching, by creating activities that reinforce traditional concepts, while having students physically exerting themselves and working together. I will use this summer to create these activities.

What will be done with my students

Students in psychology will be studying the effects of exercise and exertion on brain activity and concentration. We will also be studying differing levels of kinesthetic intelligence and how it relates to other areas of Gardner's intelligence theories.

Students in sociology will be studying group dynamics and how dividing up tasks amongst those with perceived strengths can be beneficial. They will learn to value others and themselves in differing areas of physical, mental, and social abilities and work together to achieve best results.

Students in advanced placement American history and American government and politics will use the equipment for review days. For example, I will set up a course in which the student will push a wheeled weighted sled. At the first check point will be a question and the students will have two options. If they choose the right option, they will continue on the course, and if they choose incorrectly, they will push the sled down a path that is incorrect and have to go back to the first question and go the other way. This will be a strenuous, but active way for students to prepare for the high stress AP exam in May and help me in determining what material we need to re-examine. I don't think any other class that they will be taking will have them doing such unique activities.

Benefits to my students

Any activity that brings the students outside of the classroom, while keeping them engaged and using classroom knowledge is beneficial to the students. I have had students do subject specific scavenger hunts and campus and they raved about how much they enjoyed doing something different while still being challenged to learn and call upon material from class. They enjoyed being out of the classroom and being physical (they were out of breath and said that is the most exercise they had had in a long time). My hope is to expand their opportunities to learn in multiple ways and engage a higher percentage of my students. Students benefit from varied instruction by learning more, realizing the importance of what they are learning, and having the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and mastery in new and innovative ways.
