What will be done with my students

Breakout EDU games cultivate creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. These skills are the basis and foundation of gifted instruction. Students will use Breakout EDU games once a month in the gifted classroom for the next three years to align with gifted curriculum. Next school year the topic will be Middle Ages/Medieval Times as well as Oceans. In the following two years, gifted students will study the Rain Forest, Inventions, Robotics and Ancient Greece. There are a variety of Breakout EDU games to use across these topics. Breakout games will also be used in team building and critical thinking standards as well. With access to the Breakout EDU home page, students will also play Lock of the Day as individuals, build Lock of the Day streaks, access assigned games, receive badges and awards and get creative using the Game Design Studio. With the 2 year renewal, elementary gifted students across Nassau county will use this program over the next 3 years with 3 different teachers, Mrs. Cruce, Mrs. Van Epps and Mrs. Turner in all Elementary schools.

Benefits to my students

By engaging in the games, students build self management and responsible decision-making skills as they must problem solve in real time and make critical choices to succeed in the task of interpreting the clues to unlock the game’s ultimate goal. They work in teams, so their relationship skills and social awareness must also be engaged throughout the session. Finally, in the post-game debrief, students build self-awareness by engaging in metacognitive discussions about why they made certain decisions, how their actions affected the overall success of the team, and how their role could be improved in future sessions of gameplay. These games will be used to provide engaging ways for students to gain hands-on experience with STEAM topics. Over 60% of the Breakout EDU games focus on a wide variety of topics related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Students will engage in these challenging games as a way to introduce, review, or reinforce topics that they are learning in the curriculum. Students apply academic knowledge, solve complex problems, and work collaboratively with others. Each puzzle requires students to elaborate on their thinking, test hypothesis, and persevere to open a locked box.
