Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide students with a fun, new, and exciting learning environment by changing the classroom décor into a room transformation that will resemble a construction zone. A construction room transformation will provide students with a new learning environment that will set the tone for the content being taught across all subject areas and will provide rigorous hands-on learning opportunities all week-long.

What will be done with my students

All second-grade students will walk into a construction zone as “General Contractors.” The room transformations will set the mood for these contractors as they feel like they are stepping foot into a construction zone firsthand. Lessons, hands-on activities, and targeted rigorous content will be planned that focus on the standards and benchmarks being taught during the transformation. Throughout the week, students will be BUILDING equations of their basic fact skills and DIGGING into how stories are CONSTRUCTED. Students will also preview math skills by being given a BLUEPRINT to MEASURE the sides of shapes to find the length and perimeter.

Benefits to my students

Studies shows that classroom transformations increase student engagement and retention of information being taught. The construction zone room transformations will benefit all second-grade students by providing a fun, exciting, and engaging classroom environment. When the students enter the construction zone on day one, their excitement the moment they walk through the doors will carry over to learning throughout the week. Students of all learning abilities will become much more motivated to learn because their classroom is a different learning environment which then enhances and allows them to see their standards-based content in a different way. As contractors during the room transformation, students will collaborate with each other and build their communication skills when discussing the story elements and building fact families during math. Students will also benefit from the construction zone room transformation by participating in various hands-on learning opportunities that are connected with the content being taught.

Budget Narrative

The items listed above are priced for ten second grade classrooms. The decorations and backdrops will help set the scene and mood for the transformation and the supplies will be used throughout the week. These items will be stored and used again in years to come.
