Goal

Implementing game-based learning will enhance instruction in all subjects by providing a more collaborative and engaging classroom experience for all students at Callahan Intermediate School. Game-based learning will use the power of games to support learning outcomes. 

 

What will be done with my students

Game-based learning is a form of using games in teaching to foster social and emotional learning. Teachers can use game-based learning to help students inhabit different perspectives. Game-based learning disguises the learning of a complex skill that students might otherwise resist. It also fosters building relationships and cooperation as students collaborate. Basketball- Students will be divided into teams. Each team is given a math question to solve. Whichever team answers the question correctly, gets to shoot a basketball. Each question is worth different amounts of points. The basketball game is used to increase student engagement. Putt putt- Students have the opportunity to putt the ball, and then they measure the distance the ball traveled. This is a hands-on approach to a math lesson. Jenga- A life-sized Jenga game is used for multiplication facts. Students are paired up and work with their partners to pull a Jenga piece and answer a multiplication fact question. Or a word problem is written on the Jenga piece and students work together to answer the question. Monopoly- Students will play Monopoly and learn how to add money (decimals), as well as exchange and deposit money into the bank (fourth-grade standard). Connect Four- Different times will be placed on the Connect Four game pieces. Students will work together to connect four of the same times (12:15, twelve-fifteen, quarter past twelve, and the picture of 12:15 on a clock).  

 

Benefits to my students

Playing games in the classroom often gives students a unique opportunity to learn, practice, and demonstrate their understanding of ideas in engaging ways. Studies have shown that game-based learning can improve focus and attention and improve spatial and temporal attention (ELA). Studies also show that game-based learning increases mathematical learning outcomes.
 

 

Budget Narrative

Each pod (4 teachers per pod) at Callahan Intermediate will receive 2 basketball hoops, 1 indoor putting mat, ball, and club, 1 life-sized Jenga game, 2 Monopoly board games, and 1 jumbo Connect Four game. This will give all 30 teachers at Callahan Intermediate School the abilty to use game-based learning in their classroom.
