Statewide Reach for Local Impact

FIND IT FUND IT FLORIDA

Dunbar is a magnet school, and one of our school's special programs is that we use a house system as a school-wide behavior program. All students at our school are in one of 4 houses, and each student can earn up to 7 points each day for their house. (They earn points for being on time for school, getting work done, participating, citizenship, etc.) For years, we have simply rewarded one house each month for winning the most points by throwing them a party on campus.
We would like to try something special this year. We have contacted Meachum Urban Farm and coordinated an opportunity to send 50 of our top point-earning students to the farm for a field trip. This is a perfect opportunity because one of the four houses' theme is 'botany', so at the farm they will be able to see an actual working farm and even have a picnic lunch. This would be something kids would work towards from now until May, and be a fun day of learning that will complement our magnet theme as well as learning about plants and food production.

What will be done with my students

This field trip will be a bonus to the entire school, and specifically to the 50 students who are chosen to participate. We like to offer positive reinforcement for hard work and great behavior. Having a prize like this to work towards will help kids stay focused on learning for the second half of this year. Furthermore, the kids who are able to participate will get lifelong memories of a fun trip to a farm where they will see what goes into food production. Travis Malloy, one of the farmers, has said they will be able to help harvest and sample some of the products of the farm! This is an opportunity that most city kids (like our students) do not get to experience, but this farm is very close to our school so it is a great chance for us.

Benefits to my students

Students will have an exciting reward to work towards from 'now' until May.
Students will get to experience what a farm is really like, and see how food is grown.
Students will get to do a little 'farm work' like picking tomatoes or shoveling compost!
Students will have a fun picnic lunch and get a keepsake souvenir of a farm hat or tote bag.

Budget Narrative

We will plan to order pizzas to be delivered to us at the farm, but also have the opportunity to snack on some healthy farm produce. Travis is working on ordering merchandise with the farm logo on it, so pricing on the hats/totebags is not confirmed. If we do not spend all of the money we will consult Angie to either buy farm giftcards and raffle them to kids or return the money to HEF.
