Goal

The goal of this project is to obtain two specialized curriculums that have been designed specifically for students with disabilities: Unique Learning Systems and News2you. Both of these programs provide image rich, differentiated content in English language arts, math, science, social studies, and life skills.

What will be done with my students

The Science of Reading is a must-have in literacy instruction across the nation. Using the five pillars of reading instruction, it offers proven ways to build lifelong readers, including students with disabilities. But unique learners will make even more progress with instruction tailored to their needs.

The research is clear that students with disabilities learn to read the same way that students in general education do, but they need the appropriate structure and supports to make the most progress. Examples include explicit, systematic instruction; repetition; accommodations; and modifications. To foster the best student outcomes, educators should always believe their unique learners can achieve and set high expectations for their ability to gain knowledge and skills.

Unique Learning System has always been aligned to the latest in literacy research, which is a key factor in meaningful growth for unique learners. No other solution provider creates Science-of-Reading-aligned curriculum resources specially designed for students with moderate to severe disabilities across all grade levels.

With Unique Learning systems, students get the explicit, systematic instruction and repetition that they need. All lessons and content is differentiated, with age-appropriate content and activities that engage students. Additionally, ready-made lesson plans and embedded implementation support ensure success from day one.

Each unit provided by Unique Learning Systems also includes math, science, social studies, and life skills content. This content references and relates to the theme of the English language arts component. Thus, students are receiving instruction across all content areas that is engaging and theme based.

With News2you, students learn about a new current event each week through different news articles. These articles are differentiated to meet students at all levels, allowing them to access the curriculum.

When students can engage in meaningful conversation with their peers and families about world events, the immediate result is a positive sense of belonging. But the issue-based learning in each weekly edition of News2you also comes with many long-term benefits: the standards‑aligned articles and activities help students build life skills, become more motivated learners and even discover career options.

Along with the News2you articles are worksheets and activities for English language arts, math, science, and social studies. The articles are rich in imagery and everything is differentiated.

Benefits to my students

Both Unique Learning Systems and News2you will accelerate and deepen the learning of my students. With specially designed content for unique learners that is aligned to state standards, students will work towards mastery of these standards. The content provided by both of these programs also assists students is working on and meeting IEP goals.

In regards to New2you, research confirms that students who have access to newspapers in the classroom perform better on standardized reading tests. And for students with unique learning needs, the benefits of interacting with the informational text in each weekly edition are especially far reaching—expanding skills in reading, vocabulary, writing, digital literacy and more.

In regards to Unique Learning Systems, students will also increase their reading skills, becoming more proficient in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The growth in these areas will show in the built in assessments provided by the program. Students will also show growth with math skills, specifically with functional math skills, such as adding money, telling time, measurement when cooking, and more.

Additionally, Unique Learning Systems and News2you provide positive family relationships and involvement through transparent school‑to‑home communication, timely reporting, and dedicated parent resources to improve student outcomes.
